About

DR. JOHN IN CONCERT:

Jazz and funk bandleader Dr. John is known for bringing a medicine-show vibe to the stage as he stirs up a flamboyant witch’s brew for eager ticket buyers around the world. Bedecked in voodoo iconography as he sits behind his decorated pianos and keyboards, Dr. John summons a sound as mysterious and original as his native New Orleans. Fans can’t help grooving to bayou boogies and horn-heavy R&B numbers like “Right Place Wrong Time” and “Iko Iko” before the gravel-voiced singer slows it down for haunting ballads like “I Walk on Guilded Splinters” and “City Lights”. Still on a roll after 2012’s Locked Down, his Grammy-winning collaboration with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, Dr. John’s stunning musicianship will keep fans spellbound long after the show is over.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born and raised in New Orleans, Malcolm John Rebennack (AKA Dr. John) soaked up the rich musical history of his Louisiana French heritage. By the time he was in high school, he was already playing in nightclub bands and producing records for artists like James Booker and Earl King. The gifted young musician led several bands in the ‘50s and ‘60s but really hit his stride in 1968 with Gris-Gris, his debut album as Dr. John. His voodoo ritual-inspired live shows drew him out for extensive touring in the ‘60s and ‘70s and made dedicated fans out of influential artists like Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger. Dr. John scored his first Top 20 hit in 1973 with “Right Place Wrong Time”, which instantly established him as a leading ambassador of New Orleans funk. He went on to win six Grammys, starting with his 1989 win for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group for the song “Makin’ Whoopee”. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011 thanks to decades of musical innovation and jaw-dropping performances. More than 50 years into his storied career, Dr. John still conjures serious magic and pulls out all the stops every time he takes the stage.

    Dr John & Henry Butler

by Dreamofjeanie on 6/18/17Town Hall - New York

Amazing to hear Dr John Live again. Henry Butler was an added amazing treat. Worse audience I have ever experienced. All ages! Some were late which disturbed others, some got up to dance in the aisle, took videos & cell photos, texted. Right after the announcement of no cell videos , arms went up taking videos. I wanted to jump on the stage & yell at how rude & disrespectful to these musicians & the people who came to hear them!!

    GREAT SHOW

by Spanky36 on 1/21/17Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

The Dr's voice was on point and his band was great. Very happy to have seen a living legend doing his thing. Docked one star for not having the best view from the front row.

    Love PVCH!

by h82runnow on 1/21/17Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

PCVH provides personality to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. It's hometown vibe with a variety of acts that appeal to all musical tastes. Dr. John and The Nite Trippers was another example, whose eclectic Voo Doo style combined with the New Orleans jazz makes for a fun evening. Add the incredible staff and you have the perfect location! We always enjoy going to PVCH. Thank you,

    Dr John Performance

by pie1204 on 10/17/16L'Auberge Casino & Hotel Baton Rouge - Baton Rouge

Dr John and his group were GREAT!!! The seating at L'Auberge Baton Rouge was terrible. The chairs were not comfortable and the aisle between rows were almost impassable.

    Dr John a disappointment

by MagicManStu on 7/26/16Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

I have been a Dr. John fan for many years and was eager to see him in person at the Uptown Theater in Napa, CA, a very good venue for musical shows. My disappointment in the show was caused by 3 things: 1) On many numbers the band overpowered his vocals so he could not be understood. 2) When he could be heard, the sound adjustments (treble/bass, etc) made his voice sound very harsh. 3) He didn't interact with the audience at all. No banter or explanation of the song selections, etc. So while he is a good musician and singer, he was no showman; at least on that night.

We couldn't see Dr. John but we saw the bass player, the drummer and the trombone player and they were excellent. I wanted to hear more of his piano since it took center stage Good show!
