About

DOOMTREE IN CONCERT:

Indie hip hop collective Doomtree has been repping the Minneapolis rap scene for more than a decade with fresh beats, complex wordplay, and a genre-spanning sound that incorporates jazz, punk, and blues. At seven members strong the group is a formidable live act, and they keep the energy and swagger flowing as they perform cuts from their impressive catalog. Whether they're spitting rhymes to the heavy breakbeat of "Drumsticks" or making fans bounce with underground favorite "Bangarang", Doomtree delivers a party-worthy concert experience that showcases each member's unique talents with creative lyrical interplay, live beat-making, and on-the-fly production work.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Doomtree formed gradually in the early '00s as various Minneapolis-based rappers and musicians coalesced around the work of founding member P.O.S., a local hip hop artist with a background playing punk and experimental noise music. By mid-decade the collective had expanded to include Dessa, Cecil Otter, Sims, Mike Mictlan, Paper Tiger, and Lazerbreak. In 2005 they put the Twin Cities music scene on the map with the inaugural Doomtree Blowout, a yearly festival showcasing their live performances and promoting other local acts. Following several mixtape releases, the seven-member lineup dropped their self-titled debut album in 2008, which reached No. 7 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, and embarked on a regional tour. In 2011 they released their sophomore album No Kings, a stellar record that earned widespread praise from critics and landed them on Time Magazine's 2012 list of "11 Great Bands You Don't Know (But Should)". In 2014 the band announced that the 10th annual Doomtree Blowout would be the last, but were quick to add that they were not breaking up -- welcome news for ticket buyers looking forward to the group's next tour.

    Speedy Ortiz opening for Doomtree

    by miked9us on 9/28/15State Theatre - Portland

I went to this show to see the opener and then left as I turn into a pumpkin if out too late. Speedy Ortiz is a fabulous band to see. They played some older songs mixed with the new hits. I was very excited to hear Basketball as they did not play that last month when I saw them. They are an incredibly hard working band who is always on the road it seems. So, catch them if you can.

    Short Set

by Jupiterstupider on 9/28/15State Theatre - Portland

It seemed like Doomtree was eager to get out of Portland the night they played. Granted, the State Theater wasn't packed to the gills, but the few fans that did show up were REAL fans. We drove from northern Maine and rented a hotel room to be able to see them. We bought the tickets. We bought the merch at the merch table. We stood in the front row, screaming and singing until we lost our minds. Dedicated fans got a good show, because we would have taken ANYTHING. But due to the fact that Doomtree was clearly dissatisfied with the crowd they played to, their set was very short. We managed to be loud enough to bring them back out for an encore, which was more than I was expecting. The most disappointing part of the evening, other than the short set, was the after-show interaction. 6 out of 7 members went out through the back door, and stood in the alley. Mike Mictlan went through the theater, giving fans the opportunity to have a picture taken, or tell him what a great show it was. No other band members came to the merch table, or came to meet and greet with fans. We went out back, to see if we could meet them, since they were all in the back alley of the theater. A theater employee said she would ask them to come meet us. ONLY P.O.S. came to shake our hand and get a picture. The rest of the band didn't even wave hi to us. For a band that made their start in the Indie scene, and relied on fans for support, they certainly gave us the old "screw you" when it came time to meet with the TWO fans that wanted to talk to them. We've been fans for over a decade, and we couldn't even get a handshake. Pretty sad.

One of the best live shows I've seen

by BLDO on 3/1/15The Sinclair - Cambridge

I missed Doomtree's last local show and have regretted it for years. Seeing them live at The Sinclair this time only reinforced that regret as it made it even more clear what I had missed out on. From the first song to the last the group put more energy and passion in to their performance than possibly any other group I've seen. Amazing show and a group I highly recommend listening to regularly and seeing live whenever possible.

They killed it. Open Mike Eagle was great, and opening is never easy. Then Doomtree came out and just rocked it, got everyone dancing and having a great time. Definitely see them.

    BANGARANG

I went by myself to see DOOMTREE and had the best night of my life! #NoKings #AllHands

I will always recommend Doomtree. That being said, Dessa was missed and it was unfortunate that things started before the tickets said they would. We completely missed Toki Wright. And I was shocked they were done by 10pm.

    Bangarang!

by BBAddict on 3/5/12Verizon Wireless Center - Mankato

Brought the house down! It would have been better if Dessa could have made it, but the while Doomtree group brought a great show to Mankato.

Even with a last minute venue change, Doomtree did not disappoint! They were even better than the last time I saw them a year ago. Nonstop high energy. Amazing chemistry. A very, very talented, motivated, humble group of musicians. Go see them any chance you get!
