Dokken in Concert

Dokken on Tour

Back in 2016, LA pop-metal pioneer Don Dokken put the 21st-century iteration of his eponymous band on pause and reunited its classic ‘80s version for a tour of the country where they were most warmly received in their heyday: Japan. The trip resulted in a live album, Return to the East (a sequel to 1988's iconic, Grammy-nominated concert set, Beast from the East) as well as this lineup's first new recording together in over 20 years, "It's Another Day." The reunion proved to be short-lived — guitarist George Lynch returned to the group he'd been leading since the ‘90s, Lynch Mob, while original drummer Mick Brown hung up the sticks for good in 2019. But this band has survived many personnel changes before, and Dokken have entered the 2020s with a revamped roster that includes guitarist Jon Levin (Don's right-hand man since the early 2000s) and the House of Lords rhythm section of drummer BJ Zampa and bassist Chris McCarvill.

Dokken Background

Some people are just born with perfectly rock ‘n' roll names, and when Don Dokken's first group, Airborn, were forced to rebrand due to legal issues in 1978, he wisely went with his surname as a replacement. Over the next decade, Dokken would become a one-word shorthand for ‘80s pop-metal in all its shrieking, fist-pumping glory. But before they became fixtures of the Sunset Strip scene, Dokken cut their teeth in the notorious metal hotbed of Germany, where the band recorded their first album, 1981's Breaking the Chains (and where Don burnished his powerful pipes in recording sessions with Scorpions). Two years later, the album was re-released in the US through Elektra Records, introducing stateside audiences to Don's melodically majestic vocals and guitarist George Lynch's dexterity with muscular riffs and shredtastic solos. As the hair-metal explosion raged through the ‘80s, the band would become fixtures on MTV thanks to the crunch-rock confections like "In My Dreams" and the epic power ballad "Alone Again." The group's golden period came to an end in 1989 when Lynch departed to form his own band, Lynch Mob, and Don released his solo debut. But since then, Don has kept the Dokken name alive for over four decades through a series of reinventions and reformations, demonstrating his undiminished desire to get your fists and cigarette lighters in the air.

Lynch mob was great. Dokken....... Not so much

by Smoothy J on 2/21/23Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Lynch mob was great. They were the reason my buddy and I went to this show. I wasn't expecting much from dokken because I've seen recent footage and reviews and know Don's voice isn't good these days, but my buddy and I left after two minutes into dokken - not exaggerating one bit. It was sad. Don should have retired years ago when he still had some dignity. He was great in the day, but those days are gone.

Had a great time! Penns Peak rules!

by Hiya! on 2/21/23Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Don Dokken deserves a ton of credit for still performing in spite of his health issues over the years. He can't sing like he used, not that he doesn't try. That's fine! They were real with no backing tracks and no teleprompter! George Lynch still kicks ass in a bigtime way!

    Nostalgic, but not the same.

    by W. N. on 2/21/23Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

I wanted this to be a great show, I really did. George Lynch has assembled a great group and they sounded amazing. They were the highlight of my night as I've always been a fan and they sounded as I expected. Dokken was honestly a disappointment. Don's voice is nowhere what it used to be and while it's great that I got to see Dokken, I ended up leaving a little early. It's great that he's still out on the road, but it sounded like someone covering Dokken's hits. As for the venue, it left a lot to be desired. It was 30 degrees that night and they had only a single entrance open, a single security person wanding people, and a single person scanning tickets. With only about 200 people in front of me, it took 40 long, cold minutes to get into the venue. Very disappointing experience for my first visit to Penn's Peak.

    Fantastic

by Aimee on 2/21/23Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

The show was phenomenal! Venue was gorgeous! All the bands put on a fantastic show. I was there with my 12 year old who is a HUGE Dokken/George Lynch fan and got George’s autograph that night. He is on cloud 9! He was front row all night and got great pictures and video too. The people of PA were so kind and accommodating on many levels. I’d definitely go back for another show. And of course if Dokken/ Lynch Mob come around again, we will be there! 🎼🤘🏻🎵

    Certainly not like the picture

by Phil on 2/21/23Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Booooo! Where's the lineup I see in the picture on Ticketmaster? The only one is Don D, no Mick Brown, no Pilson. False advertising, and really a shell game; showing you one thing, but giving another. Boo! Hey Don, c'mon, have a little self respect and go on a diet. Man, Don has let himself go to pot belly and he looks ridiculous. On the other hand, George Lynch looks like he's keeping fit and sharp. I was really disappointed in Dokken doing that. He didn't sound terrible, I got my money's worth, but came away thinking that I probably couldn't skipped this and went bowling.

    Old Rock Stars Never Die

by LoganWX on 12/7/21Oxnard Performing Arts Center - Oxnard

The OPAC is a nice, little venue (and they have food and drinks though their website does not say so) but, apparently, it's not much of a rock venue because the place was about 1/10 full. SERIOUSLY! There was a few hundred people there, tops! But Jack Russell's Great White and Dokken put on a good show anyway. (I know some acts would have just left.) Now, you expect old rock stars to loose their voice with age, but not Jack Russell. The dude could barely walk onstage (he had to use a cane and keep hold of the microphone stand during the set), but that was because this was his first show since a 2+ week stay in the hospital. And what about that 61-year-old rock star's voice? It was exactly like it used to be! I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT. But if you're a Great White fan, you better see him soon because this could be his last tour. He's got a GREAT BAND TOO, so make sure you see "JACK RUSSELL'S Great White" and not those other, bitter guys going by just "Great White." Now Don Dokken, is one of those old rock stars who has lost his voice, but I knew that already, since I saw them a few years ago. But he still puts on a fun show even though he doesn't move around much anymore either and his right hand, apparently, isn't very useful anymore at the age of 68. He also has a great band behind him. Make sure you see them on their upcoming shows on the Sunset Strip. Again, both bands put on a great show even though there weren't many people there. (Our seats were in the balcony, but we were able to get down in front, 3 rows back, because there were so few people there.) So, if you live around the Oxnard Performing Arts Center, please, go to some shows and help fill the place up because, if you don't, no acts will book the place.

    Great Concert

by Cy on 11/26/21Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

Concert was great. Was great seeing the group and George Lynch perform. The new members are fantastic. Don Dokken has a little trouble hitting high notes, but otherwise his performance was pretty good.

    Love Dokken but...

by Dave on 11/14/21Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

Couldn't wait to see Dokken after so many years. Venue was great, seats were great. Sadly, Don Dokken could not hit ANY high notes at all. A staple of Dokken was the range of notes in the music. I get it, its not Dokken without him, but the few times the base singer joined it sounded better. Why not get some extra singers to help like Billy Joel does now, so us fans can continue to enjoy the concerts...i would go every year! I'm sure the rest of the band knows this....please do something about it, we LOVE Dokken!

Great place to have a concert!

by GB on 11/14/21Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

I haven’t seen the band in 35 years and it was a great nostalgic experience! It was also very nice to have dinner and walk to the concert from town. Overall I would highly recommend concerts at this location!
