About

DIONNE FARRIS IN CONCERT:

From her ‘90s days singing with hip hop group Arrested Development to her acclaimed solo career, singer Dionne Farris has remained a world-class performer renowned for her sultry voice and mesmerizing stage presence. In 2013 she released a live jazz album with the Russell Gunn Quartet, and she continues to bring the house down with Gunn and company every time they take the stage. Their intimate, jazzy sets conjure up the smoky speakeasies and swinging hipster clubs of days past, taking ticket buyers on a nostalgic musical journey brimming with effortless style and first-rate musicianship. Farris can seriously belt and she’s not afraid to hold back in concert -- whether she and the group are improvising on a laid-back groove or playing cuts from their collaborative album, her flawless vocals and commanding performances always hit the right note.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dionne Farris was born and raised in New Jersey, where she began singing, dancing, and competing in pageants at an early age. Her parents named her after Dionne Warwick, and the choice was fitting – at age 13 she began focusing primarily on singing, joining her school choir and starring in musical theater productions. In the early ‘90s she began singing with pioneering hip hop group Arrested Development, featuring on several of their early singles including hits like “Tennessee” and “People Everyday”. After a fall-out with the group she made her solo debut in 1994 with the album Wild Seed – Wild Flower, which featured the ubiquitous single “I Know”. The song peaked at No. 1 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart, becoming one of the most-played songs of 1995 and earning her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. After writing songs for a series of movie soundtracks in the late ‘90s, Farris released her long-awaited sophomore album For Truth If not Love in 2007. In 2013 she linked up with legendary trumpet player Russell Gunn and his band for a live jazz album titled Dionne Get Your Gunn: Featuring the Russell Gunn Quartet with Dionne Farris. The record was a critical success, and Farris and Gunn’s groovy live shows continue to captivate fans every time they tour.
