Amazing show for the price that was given

by Diverism on 9/28/16Newport Music Hall - Columbus

This show was absolutely amazing.People of all ages came out to see Between the buried and Me, Fallujah and The Devin Townsend Project. Whats even better is that Devin Townsend himself stuck around afterwards to sign autographs and talk with those who waited even after the venue was shutting down.I was able to take pictures and talk with the band after their masterful performance and have the time of my life.

    Devin Does It Again

by 2rjuinm3 on 9/25/16Newport Music Hall - Columbus

This makes the fourth time I have seen Devin Townsend and each time the experience has been better than before. i am 66 years old and this time I asked the venue to provide me with a chair. I'm not good at standing for a whole concert anymore. The venue provided me with a chair stage left that was closer than the pit area. I got to see Devin up close and personal. Wow. Stormbending, Rejoice, and The Planet Smasher are the pieces that stuck out for me, but the entire set was great. I will be seeing him again whenever he comes near enough. Fallujah and Between the Buried and Me were the opening acts. Fallujah was good; I will be listening to them more on my music service. BBM was terrible, a Coheed and Cambria rip off. Lost in themselves and seemingly unaware of the audience, their songs (3 or 4 I couldn't tell which) were interminably long and tedious. When a coherent moment appeared, it was quickly swallowed up again by their over dramatics. Sad.

    Dev is the man

by Metalesq on 9/19/16Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

Very nice surprise in opener Falluja. Good growelly vocals. Good bass and layered guitar work. Btbam great live. Real good energy. May not be your style at first but sit down and give their stuff a few full listens. While others gripe at stolen internet music Dev certainly wins more fans by being one of the most innovative, accessible, diverse and talented musicians today. The VIP ticket had an intimate full Q&A. Who does that? The show was a blistering range, opening with Night. Ziltoid fans got hyperdrive, by your command, March of the poozers. Staples like Kingdom and rejoice. New material included failure, stormbending and higher which closed the show. Highlight may have been acoustic ah-ei just for the goofiness. there are lots of devheads for a reason. He makes fun music and puts on fun shows.

    ANIMALS AS LEADERS ARE UNCOMPARABLE!!!

by JerBear1969 on 12/21/14Mayan Theater - Los Angeles

animals as leaders are the best progressive/metal band in the world!!! i truly hope they stay together and get more of whatever they want!!! truly one of the best rock shows of my life and i've been rocking since Heart played their reunion show in Seattle 1980!! I wish them the best success, but they do sound best in a small to medium venue!! the visuals and led lighted instruments added to their awesomeness!!! To see musicians create such a huge sound with very complicated music and make it look effortless is a true joy!!

    Surreal!!

by Princessncali on 12/20/14Mayan Theater - Los Angeles

Starting with the historical and unique architecturally designed building, entering the venue we were surprised and impressed with the layout and design. The sound quality and acoustics starting with the first band, Monument, was right on. As Animals as Leaders came on, the sound seemed to go up along with the energy and anticipation of Devin Townsend. When the man himself appeared on stage, his theatrical and energetic vibe was relayed right back to him from the crowd. We were down in the pit and right on the edge of what we called the "vortex" or circle pit which as insane and energetic as it was, it was all in good fun. I even saw a few people fall and instead of getting trampled on, several people stopped their slam dancing to help get them up. Good times!!

    Devin and AAL; Amazing

by CeeDubH on 12/19/14Mayan Theater - Los Angeles

Starting off with Monument, a surprise band I'd never heard or seen before. Although the sound was a bit muddy, but their musical intentions were definitely there and I'll be checking them out some more. Let's talk about Animals as Leaders. I've been listening to AAL since their debut album. This was the first album I've ever had in my life cause me to turn off the lights and sit in a dark room and not move until the album was over. It's that powerful. With the release of the Waves of Babies single and their two subsequent albums I've watched Tosin evolve this project into a creative storm. It's an amazing group, that I had no idea what to expect with a live show. Their music would be hard to mosh to? Will it be powerful with all of the eclectic influences? There are no lyrics or chants to get the crowd involved in? Can the drummer handle the reproduction of the drum machines from the debut album? Guess what? AAL is one of the most powerful bands I've ever seen. They blew me away. They're heavier live, their technicality somehow undiminished and yet still striking, power ridden chords dropping my jaw. Nothing short of amazing. If you can, go see them. It's an awe inspiring performance. DEVIN TOWNSEND. This guy. THIS GUY. I'm a relative new comer to DT. I had heard some of the Strapping Young Lad stuff and liked some, disliked others, loved The New Black, etc. His Devin Townsend Project material, especially Deconstruction and Kai, are forever favorites. But his live show started off with tracks from his projects as far back as 1998 that I'd have never even heard before but were just as strong as anything he's released to date. One of the beautiful things about Devin is his ability to properly convey anything he wants to. Jazz? Metal? Comedy? Ambient? Progressive? Swing? Rock? Acoustic? Pop? Doesn't matter, Devin's got you covered, and it's all gonna be great. You can listen to Strapping Young Lad to get amped up before the show, watch his powerful Ziltoid littered space operatic show and get headaches from the screaming you've been doing during the show, and then listen to Ghost on the way home to calm yourself down. But I expected this from DT. How, with such a catalog of music and years of touring under his belt, could he not be an amazing show? Of course he will be. But what really blew me away was him. His compassion, his dedication to his music, to his show, and especially to his fans. Here's an amazing example as to what these stars can and who they should be. He had his audience, myself included to the point of tears with his powerful statements of emotion and love and fear and life. He is a real person, he shares so much, he is us. Devin Townsend is not just a great performer, but a great conveyer of real human emotion. Go see Devin. Go see Animals As Leaders. Go see Monument. None will disappoint.
