DEERHUNTER IN CONCERT:
Experimental rockers Deerhunter pour the same thought and energy into their live performances as they do their groundbreaking records. Building on the swirling atmospherics of their studio albums, the group explores uncharted musical territory with echoing guitars and avant-garde sound collages on epics like “Helicoptor”, “He Would Have Laughed”, and “Cover Me Slowly”. And they combine those kinds of experimental sounds with adrenaline-fueled rock on favorites like “Nothing Ever Happened”, “Dream Captain”, and “Snakeskin”. Versatile frontman Bradford Cox adapts to both these approaches, as he coos/croons/screams his tales of angst and alienation. Known for their intense live shows, Deerhunter take ticket buyers into the stratosphere with out-of-this-world musical explorations that blend ambient bliss with garage rock performance art.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
When he was a kid, Bradford Cox found his first artistic outlet by creating sound collages on his family karaoke machine. This experimental passion became a full-time pursuit when he formed Deerhunter in 2001 with drummer/keyboardist Moses Archuleta. The intrepid sonic explorers went through several initial lineups before Cox reached out to his high school friend, guitarist/vocalist Lockett Pundt. Adding the dynamic guitarist paid off for the group, as Pundt’s debut on the group’s 2007 album Cryptograms helped them craft their most rock-oriented and critically acclaimed album to date. They generated even more buzz the following year with the release of Microcastle and its epic single “Nothing Ever Happened”, which became an instant indie staple and appeared on many best-of lists at the end of the year. While albums such as 2010’s Halcyon Digest and 2015’s Fading Frontier continue to thrill audiophiles and musical explorers, Deerhunter continues to wow crowds with their aurally spectacular live shows.
Awesome venue with two great bands. Wouldn't hesitate to go see either band again
Incredibly impressed with the Dirty Projectors. They were unique with a freshness of sound, crisp and intense with deep and intense combinations of voice and music. The songs were haunting, warm, uplifting, adventurous and flowing. The musical expression of the band was dynamic, alive, and effective with smooth transitions and the dynamics spot on. The compositions were fascinating, unexpected and the balance perfect. A great show!
Dirty Projectors were fantastic. I was amazed how they could recreate such unique music from their albums live. All the women vocalists were incredible, and of course Dave still shreds. A ton of fun to see. Deerhunter was a lot of noise. Their guitarist looked pretty bored. I would be bored too if I had to play bar chords for 3 hours. But they had a good stage presence, still a good time. But yeah, y'all got the headliners backwards for sure.
Deerhunter is the best contemporary rock band now. Always give a good show, & this was better than last year, due to venue. Welcome back Webster Hall
Dirty pa good Brad mad?! Venue a disaster Nobody knew where to seat us
The set by Deerhunter, which featured some sturdy rock songs, was marred by the wasted behavior of Bradford Cox. He abused the crowd, he moped about not having a windscreen for his mic (and then was oblivious when a stage tech brought one). Enough said. Dirty Projects, on the other hand, was amazing! The stunning vocals, the incredible musicianship, the tight rendition of some very intricate compositions all contributed to one of the greatest shows I've seen in quite a while.
Both Dirty Projectors and Deerhunter put on incredible performances. Dirty Projectors are a tight unit that will screw with your sense of time and make you fall in love with their vocal harmonies. Deerhunter will melt your face off with their extended and weird jams. The show was epic from beginning to end.
Deerhunter and Dirty Projectors we’re both incredible. Performances I will never forget.
I've been a fan of this band for a while so I had very high expectations going into it, and they surpassed all of my expectations. They had a great mix of songs and had an awesome balance of playing songs the audience wants to hear and throwing in their own flair with improv. Bradford Cox is so funny and charming in person too!
This performance was actually epic. Can't beat that.
