I'm a hardcore DBaz fan and when I saw that he was coming with a string quartet, it definitely piqued my interest. I would've gone to the show either way but I had no way to prepare for the way the concert played out. This is David Bazan taking his music to the next level. He has hired a world-class string quartet to put string arrangements/accompaniments on his songs, old and new, and it's 1.5 hours of just marvelous aurally breathtaking music. David still maintains his gritty rock and vocals on the stage juxtaposed into a classical setting... I can't even describe how amazing that experience was. As always, he took questions from the audience and there was plenty of bantering about current events. All in all, an incredibly magical show and SOOOO GLAD I WENT!!
I loved the fact that he was playing the old album and that I could buy everything on vinyl!! He did this awesome thing where he would answer any question he heard, even if they were a bit dumb. Never judged. I kind of liked the fact that he also let people know that there would be no encore.
He's just awesome! I'm from Brazil and this was the first time I got to see him live, and I just loved the concert.
I've seen David Bazan every single show he's had in NYC and each time he brings something incredibly unique to the table. His music isn't fancy or dressed up. It's raw, evocative, heart-wrenching. His music makes you challenge age-old notions and rethink the depth of a simple melody. I just don't know anyone who creates music like this. It's no-frills independent rock at its best. I highly, highly recommend to anyone that cares about honest music.
David Bazan is amazing! I enjoyed the performance immensely.
For happy to see Mr. B. I could have done without the audience diatribes, but still entertaining.
Bazan was in top form. He split up the Control album in a Side A/Side B format with the middle third of the show featuring a collection of hit songs. Great venue, great headliner, crappy opening band, slightly higher than normal bar prices. Not a bad way to spend election evening.
Fewer moving parts means clean, beautiful, sincere rock and roll.
I have been to quite a few shows in my life, but let me tell you, David Bazan's ranks at the top of my list. I had high expectations to begin with, but he surpassed them. His setlist was amazing - he performed just the right amount of songs from each of his albums (and even some from Pedro the Lion and a lovely Gillian Welch cover!) I can't wait until I get the chance to see him again, I will definitely be there. * This show was also really amazing because the opening act, S. Carey, was outstanding. Really and truly, this was my favorite show I have ever attended.
