    Great Dancing, Weird Introduction

by millicentpschmidt on 3/19/14Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

I had a lovely time watching the ballet, but the preamble was painfully awkward and uncomfortable. First the guy comes out to thank the sponsors; I think this is a bit gauche and he needed to practice speaking in front of people (and part of the purpose of the programme) but whatever. Then this woman comes out to say thank you to and present roses to an administrative person who was retiring after 20 years of service. Instead of talking metaphorically about the wonderful ways she contributed to the company (with a few specifics), they listed her duties (she filled out 1099s and stuffed envelopes, etc...). It went on forever and managed to both demean her work and not actually say anything nice about her. I was mortified on her behalf and I didn't even know her. I hope no one else ever retires so other audience members don't have to sit through that horrible display of almost gratitude. As for the ballet: the dancing was lovely and interestingly choreographed. There were a few mistakes, but they didn't detract from the whole experience at all. I'm used to seeing the NYC ballet so my expectations were not super high for a small town performance, but I was delightfully pleased by the performance. Bolero was one of the most amazing dances I've ever seen (thought the costumes were weird). The UF orchestra was amazing! They were incredibly good, and I'd go see them anytime.

Very good production of The Nutcracker.

by henandfish on 12/26/13Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

Costumes and primary dancers VERY enjoyable. Find a way to make the play shorter and it would be perfect.

    The Nutcracker was amazing!!!

by h2oMama on 12/25/13Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

Everything, from purchasing tickets to parking, was easy and fast. My grandaughter is nicknamed "The Tiny Tornado" because she never stops. From the time the curtain opened, she never budged, said a peep or took her eyes off the stage. It was just wonderful for her. Her mom and I enjoyed it immensely and got the biggest kick out of watching my grandaughter. Thank you for a wonderful time.

Dance Alive Nutcracker Ballet, just wonderful!

by Lindatoo on 12/24/13Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

The Dance Alive performance of the Nutcracker Ballet was wonderful. The children were so professional, and the professionals were breathtaking. Took my 86 year old mother, and we both thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I hope to see another Dance Alive performance soon.

    The Nutcracker was absolutely Fabulous

by ToDance on 12/23/13Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

The Nutcracker was definately up to my expections. The story of the Nutcracker came to life with such grace and beauty. There was even a little humor that was well delivered. Thank you to the cast for a wonderful evening.

First Ballet; had a great time

by Surinam on 12/23/13Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

Although the Company is local to Gainesville, they were very good. I wish there was a live orchestra, but I'm guessing hat the ticket price would have been much higher. This is a great show to bring the family or for a date night.

Rite of Spring worth the 55 year wait

by Mikiroland on 3/20/13Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

I am very familiar with The Rite of Spring music, having listened to it on various recordings over a span of some 55 years. However, the live rendition by Maestro Chobaz and the UF Symphony Orchestra was absolutely riveting. Not a note dropped, not an out-of-tune string, and a percussion and brass section to drool over. The music was a big success. Not so with the dance, however, because, at times during orchestral upheaval, where you'd imagine lions and tigers chasing the dancers, or vice versa, the dancers simply pirouetted around the stage as though nothing out of the ordinary were happening. At other times, however, when the music and the choreography jelled, the overall experience was absolutely sublime. The orchestra performed flawlessly up until the last couple of minutes, when the task of navigating all those rythmic labyrinths seemed to confuse a few players. But they recovered well and ended on a stunning duet between the dancers and the orchestra. I'm not used to not seeing the orchestra on stage, and so it took a bit of getting used to the orchestra being in the pit. But the sound erupted beautifully out of that dark interior. The opening piece, Morton Gould's Latin American Symphonette, was an exciting warmer-upper with fun and tantalizing music danced with imaginative freedom by the dancers, who were given theh chance to do a little acting and took advantage of the opportunity, much to the delight of the audience. The Tristan and Isolde was a troublesome combination of wonderful dance, great orchestral playing and singing by someone who probably should retire from the stage. I was amazed that the couple dancing could concentrate on what they were doing, considering the struggle the vocalist seemed to be experiencing with some notres that were obviously beyond her range. I'm sure that Dr. Graham was a fine soloist in her time, and is most likely a very good voice teacher. But her performance was a distraction form an otherwise well performed Liebestod. Overall, I was hugely impressed with the UF Symphony Orchestra. I am a classical music lover, and that is really what I relate to the best. My wife, however, is a connoisseur of dance, and so between the two of us, we thought the night's offerings well worth the price of admission. One other thing: the audience applauded the dancers throughout all three pieces, which was a big distraction, especially for those of us who love to LISTEN to live orchestral music. I don't know if that is a standard for ballet, but if it is, that's too bad.
