Their show on 12-14-12 was a lot more than I expected. Great musicianship, lighthearted, funny, and just downright entertaining. My only regret is that I can't go see them tonight.
I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1960's. I had seen Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks multiple times back then. I maintained an affection for his music and kept his recordings in my collection even as technology changed the formats. It was a shock to see this old man come on to the stage. I am an old man myself now so why was I shocked. It had been 35 years in between concerts. What hadn't changed was the crisp punctuated style, masterful musicianship, creative vocal arrangements and a lighthearted stage presence that made the show a grin inspiring toe tapping celebration. My only criticism is that while Jamie Leopold was a sweet man and I believe a personal friend of Dan's. His music is not ready for prime time. It was painful.
I went to this with my mother, who is a big fan. I have never really listened to Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, but I sure would like to hear more. I enjoyed this very much and he is quite the entertainer, and his musicians are tremendously talented. I am sure glad I went.
Who wouldn't love a group that goes from Johnny Mercer ("I'm an Old Cowhand") to "Daddy's Drinkin' Up Our Christmas" to "I Scare Myself", and just about everything in between.
We had a great time . The weather was beautiful and the music was great. We really liked the amphitheatre. It would have been nice to know that we could have brought food and drink. Had a great time.
great show, great venue! Loved the open air theater, having some wine, listening to great favorites. The band was as good as ever, Dan Hicks is still a character. Really great entertainment.
Dan Hicks put on a very professional show. His band was tight, and we loved his bringing on old band members to play with current ones! The final number where everyone jammed was hot, hot, hot! He was his usual laconic amusing self that night. Wished he could have played a couple of sets, though. His part of the program, was too short. Is the old master getting tired?
Great evening in Portland, original band members sitting in, no one has ever duplicated his sound. Agree with the bass player, one of the great songwriters of our time.
As his former bandmate said, "Dan Hicks is one of the great unrecognized American songwriters." Funny and great listening, clapping along-with, toe-tapping music.
