About

CYRUS CHESTNUT IN CONCERT:

Renowned jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut is as revered for the notes he doesn't play as he is for the ones he does -- his restraint and taste-level as a soloist have earned him recognition as one of the best players of his generation. In concert, "The Nutman" -- as fans affectionately call him -- never ceases to impress, delivering his gospel-infused jazz sound with a vibrance and energy that underscore his passion and dedication. Whether he's lending his nimble fingers to classics by legends like Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck or performing original favorites like "Mason Dixon Line", Chestnut always performs with class and precision, treating ticket buyers to a world-class concert experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Baltimore, MD-born Cyrus Chestnut grew up surrounded by music -- his father was a church organist and his mother was a choir director. By age six he was playing piano during services, and by age nine he was studying classical music at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University. He went on to attend Boston's Berklee School of Music, where his burgeoning talent earned him several honors including the Quincy Jones and Oscar Peterson Scholarships. He launched his career in the mid-'80s to overnight success, apprenticing with luminaries like Jon Hendricks, Donald Harrison, and Wynton Marsalis before setting out on his own as a bandleader. He made his debut in 1992 with the album The Nutman Speaks, an auspicious record that established both his nickname and his status as a rising jazz star. Critical acclaim quickly gave way to commercial success when his 1994 album Dark Before Dawn peaked at No. 6 on the jazz charts. Since then he's released more than ten albums, including 2014's Journeys, which features his band the Cyrus Chestnut Trio. A veteran performer known for his tempered playing style and improvisatory skill, Chestnut continues to dazzle with his brilliant playing on tour.

    Incredibly Talented Jazz Pianist

    by Savian1 on 3/23/15Ritz Theatre - Jacksonville

Cyrus Chestnut Concert was great! His piano playing could possibly be compared to Oscar Peterson's but he injects so much passion & creativity he goes way beyond that. He also recently traveled to Senegal and added a jazz infused version of some of the music he discovered there. Definitely worth hearing his music.
