I wasn't sure what to expect, since this is the first opera of its kind. The story line is something that everyone can relate to (the bond of love). The subtitles made it easy for non-Spanish/non-English speaking people to follow along. I especially liked that the songs had subtitles as well. My boyfriend wasn't sure he was going to like it but at the end, he thanked me for introducing it to him, because he LOVED it! There was not a dry eye in the theater. I HIGHLY recommend it and would definitely go see it again!
I was intrigued by the concept and attracted by Lyric Opera's involvement. The music was good and interesting and accessible . Even though the tickets were inexpensive the production values were sparse- I expected more because of the Lyric branding. It would have been more accurate to describe this as semi-staged. Voices were quite good. I would rate this on a par with some of the better things that Light Opera Works have done.
The production was beautiful and the venue could not have been more appropriate. This was a first time seeing an opera for my teen age daughters and they loved it!
We loved the Genesee Theatre, a beautifully restored building in downtown Waukegan Art District. Took a walk by Lake Michigan before enjoying the performance. We loved the story of a father's journey through life and what he and his family endured to come to the U.S. from Mexico. Also the challenges of the family he left behind. It was so uplifting to hear the story of the Monarch butterfly and how their migration tied the migration of the families.
"Cruzar la Cara de la Luna," the "Mariachi Opera" is a wonderful show: a very meaningful story, beautifully written and performed by a magnificent cast. Saw it tonight at the Genesee Theater in Waukegan
While this certainly isn't a classic opera, it is a wonderful experience! The mariachi band is amazing, the singers perfection, and the story unforgettable. This is truly a must-see experience that unfortunately doesn't receive the attention it deserves.
From exuberant mariachi numbers to haunting arias, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, is brilliantly written and beautifully performed. My favorite event of the past year.
My wife and I had a great time at this musical. The acting was good, with both Spanish and English pronunciations done well.Story line was actually something most immigrants can relate to and understand, but someone on the outside would be able to capture quite easily. The Mariachi music was phenomenal and complemented the musical very nicely.
This opera was great especially since we like Marachi music
