I am not trying to put Brian down he has an amazing voice. I was expecting instruments and zero singing so I didn't enjoy the show when Brian was singing because he was taking away from the music and that's why I went. Brian sounds like Frank Sinatra I'm just not into that I'm into instruments.
Although I thought the program was well performed, I was disappointed that it included so much Christmas material. The soloist was outstanding, the conductor and the orchestra were wonderful, but the program was too narrow. I realize that this is the holiday season, but Christmas is not the only holiday. I would not have attended if I had known the program in advance.
The Cincinnati Pops at the Broward Center on Monday, December 8, 2014 was a disappointment. Knowing what a fine repatation this orchestra has, we so looked forward to the concert, especially since Brian Stokes Mitchell was the singer. Stokes Mitchell was great, if only they had given him more of the program to sing, i.e. Ave Maria. The program was short on really good holiday/Christmas music and the orchestra at times drowned out the singer. The staging was terrible. No risers so most of the different sections were not readily visible. Very poor attendance suggests to me that the show was not marketed well. Low turn out probably contributed to the orchestra's less than enthusiastic playing.
This concert was fantastic in every way. The orchestra was top notch. The conductor was clearly in charge. Brian Stokes Mitchell was his usual entertaining self and lots of fun as well.
