    China National Symphony

by Marie2119 on 3/10/13Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

Overall, our first experience attending the Symphony performance was enjoyable. The first half was not quite as good for a few reasons: The music was a little plodding and there was some sort of dramatics going on with the lead violinist that could have been handled differently. After the intermission, the lead violinist was subbed and the piece was very dramatic and enjoyable. As always, love the Valley Performing Arts Center. It is a jewel of the Valley!

    Wonderful experience

    by Chen5 on 3/4/13STEPHENS AUDITORIUM - Ames

I will highly regard the event and the performance delivered by China National Symphony Orchestra. The best thing was that I heard Mr. Wu's wonderful playing. It was incredible. Of course I will thank the sponsors and organizations which brought the event to Iowa.

    An evening to remember

by Datawonk on 3/4/13STEPHENS AUDITORIUM - Ames

This was a splendid orchestra performing deeply satisfying works that left me wanting to hear more--much more. If I lived where they live, I would buy season tickets in a heartbeat. The opening Requiem for the Earth was only the first movement of a four part work. It memorialized a devastating earthquake in central China in 2008, and the first movement should have been followed by the remaining movements to make it whole. The first movement was engaging in a way that left me wanting to hear the remaining three movements. The Yellow River Piano Concerto was breathtaking--and I mean it left me breathless. Muye Wu, the pianist, was powerful beyond words. He electrified the audience with his domination of the piano. The four movements, each by a separate composer, were delightful. The immediate and thunderous response from the audience was an indication that an encore was expected, but not delivered. A missed opportunity. The final work--Ein Heldenleben--could have been skipped. Well done, but I can hear it elsewhere. After the first two pieces of notably Chinese music I wanted to hear more, much more. And I will do so again if and when they return to Iowa.

    A Contrast in Style

    by PLH1 on 3/4/13STEPHENS AUDITORIUM - Ames

The performance was a true contrast in style. The first half was pure Asian melodies that flowed with an engaging ease. The piece featuring a young pianist was very exciting and particularly enthralling with rise and fall of intensity throughout the piece. The second half of the concert was classical European full of dissonance and at times leaving the listener wondering if it was not just a little too disjointed yet interesting because of it. The violin solos by the guest concert master seemed a bit simplistic as a featured part of the piece. Overall, a good performance of contrast.
