    Gorka & Wheeler at Birchmere

by Kraesq on 12/13/16Birchmere - Alexandria

We have been John Gorka fans for years and became Cheryl Wheeler fans, too, after seeing them perform together at the Birchmere a couple times, They provide a very enjoyable evening of folk music with love and great humor.

    Wonderful!!!!

    by emilycat2 on 12/8/15Birchmere - Alexandria

To see these two seasoned performers work together is to see something magical happen. They clearly respect and honor each other's work. There were times that John Gorka sang along with Cheryl Wheeler's work, and times when she sang along with him. What a magical evening!!! I can't wait until they appear together again!!!!

Get cozy for a charming evening

    by N435L784L on 12/8/15Birchmere - Alexandria

The Birchmere has long October Fest style seating. So one should be prepared to get cozy with strangers. The audience was as friendly and interesting as the performers. The dinner menu was diverse and the food was well prepared. John Gorka and Cheryl Wheeler shared the stage. Their conversations with one another and with the audience were a big part of the show's charm. They're witty, earthy, and incredibly talented. Of course, the music was phenomenal.

Cheryl is a Goddess and John ain't too shabby

by Bastillewoman on 4/1/14Birchmere - Alexandria

I've been going to Cheryl's shows for over 25 years, and I came to see Cheryl, since I'd never heard of John Gorka. He did his set first and I really enjoyed it. Even noted a few of his songs to listen to again when I got home ("I'm From New Jersey" and "People My Age"). He has a sweet, funny, self-deprecating stage presence. His CD was already sold out by the time I got into the shop. I spoke to a very disappointed woman who said, "I'm probably the only lesbian here who came to see John instead of Cheryl", lol! Cheryl was her usual hilarious self. Some people in the audience were laughing so hard they were crying. She performed a good mix of funny and serious stuff, and had us sing along with a few of the choruses. I bought her "live" CD for the 2nd time, since I'd lent the other to a friend and never got it back.

    Good show despite Cheryl's cold

    by O2BOrr on 1/21/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Cheryl came out first and was fighting a very bad cold. She did a very good job of powering through. The people closest to us hadn't seen her before and I thought it was too bad that they weren't hearing her in her best voice since she normally sings so well. Her quick wit was unaffected by the cold and she had the crowd laughing as usual. John Gorka was also funny, but said that he hadn't relearned some of his songs prior to the tour. When people requested a certain song he made the comment "I wish I knew that one right now.." That was disappointing since you'd expect to be able to request his earlier songs too. I personally feel Gorka's best work is from his 1st 3 records. It would have been nice to hear more from these. He played a tiny electric guitar at one point that had some feedback that wouldn't go away. Could have lived without that.

Outstanding concert Cheryl Wheeler & Kenny White

by jjohne on 4/2/12Aladdin Theater - Portland

It doesn't get much better than this.... Kenny White leading off with some hilarious music and stories --- followed by Cheryl with a nice mix of new/new (<4 weeks old), new and some oldies. A couple of the new/new and new songs were outstanding -- hope she puts them on her next album.

    Cheryl Wheeler, Kenny White

    by Quiltz45 on 4/2/12Aladdin Theater - Portland

Excellent show! Great fun. They are both wonderful musicians and songwriters, but also funny, unpretentious, and timely. I can't wait to see them again.
