About

CHEERS LIVE ON STAGE is a rousing new theater comedy set in Boston’s iconic basement bar where WE know everybody’s name: Diane and Sam. Carla, Coach, Cliff... Norm!

Utilizing the original award winning television scripts skillfully adapted from the first season of NBC’s long-running sitcom, the stage production gives modern audiences the chance to experience live for the first time since its original taping , that rare sophisticated TV comedy that seamlessly combines slapstick comedy, romance and drama.

Based on the first season of Cheers, this production finds baseball player-turned-bar owner Sam “Mayday” Malone hiring newly jilted aspiring poet Diane Chambers to work in his pub, alongside perpetually confused old bartender Coach and tough-talking waitress Carla, who cracks wise with know-it-all mail carrier Cliff and perennial barstool-warmer Norm.

Cheers was the last, and perhaps greatest, of the pre-ironic golden age of sitcoms, “appointment television” with bona fide jokes and punch lines, pre-dating Seinfeld, Friends and The Office. At the time it concluded in 1993, the series held a record 117 Emmy nominations and 28 wins, earning nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series for each of its 11 seasons. Theater, television and film veteran Erik Forrest Jackson – acclaimed for his Off-Broadway comic adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie as well as Doll, a twisted take on Ibsen's A Doll's House – has expertly adapted the series’ original 1982 scripts for the stage. Award-winning director Matt Lenz (Pageant: The Musical; First National Tour of A Christmas Story: The Musical) fine-tunes CHEERS LIVE ON STAGE for today’s TV audiences accustomed to niche programming and binge-watching.

    Actors were spot on!!

by amt318 on 10/18/16Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The actor that played Sam sounded just like Ted Danson, and the actress who played Diane nailed her character also. The only disappointment was that I was there on opening night and they were an hour late and the set wasn't complete. They did offer free tickets to come back and see the play with a complete set but I didn't take advantage of that. Overall, even with an incomplete set, it was great. I think it really delivered on authenticity and brought back memories of watching the show with my family.

    Disappointing

by BC2010 on 10/16/16Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

We were disappointed by Cheers Live. The one liners were forced, Diane over did the laugh and Sam seemed to lack the swagger we loved on TV. Coach and Carla were true to. their characters, and Norm and Cliff seemed almost absent. The cast lacked the dynamics that the tv show had.

    Lots of fun

by AWR60611 on 10/14/16Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

This show was a lot of fun. It was basically 8-10 old (Coach & Diane) Cheers episodes mashed into one. Diane's intro to the bar; rich guy may want to buy the bar; Sam's brother Derek coming back; etc. Stage was amazing - just perfect. The actors all looked just like their character on Cheers (well except Sam) and sounded just like them too. I really enjoyed the show.

    Entertaining but forgettable

by KenJennings on 10/11/16Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The show was extremely average. The characters we great and funny, but there was nothing memorable. I would only check this out if you are a fan of Cheers, as I am. I don't think anyone else could probably enjoy it.

    Absolutely enjoyable experience!

by MacCookieMonster on 10/8/16Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The set was amazing when we first walked in. Each character and scene put you right back in the actual sitcom. The actors portrayed their characters perfectly. Their mannerisms and voices were spot on! The Broadway Playhouse was the perfect setting for this experience.

    Lots of laughs

Playing very familiar characters can be very hard, but the cast captured the Cheers' flavor -- especially Carla and Coach.
