About

CHARLIE THOMAS' DRIFTERS IN CONCERT:

Class-act and crooner Charlie Thomas played a monumental role in the rise of R&B sensation the Drifters in the '50s, shaping doo-wop and soul for years to come. As an original member of the group, Thomas has charmed audiences across the nation for nearly 60 years with his charisma and polished style. More than half a century since the Drifters 1956 debut, Charlie Thomas and the gang still sound fresh as ever with their warm, perfect blend of harmonies on classics like “Sweets For My Sweet” and “When My Little Girl Is Smiling." Charlie Thomas' Drifters  continue perform their quintessential hits with nothing but class, and are sure to delight fans on their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Charlie Thomas got his start in 1958 with the Harlem-based group the Five Crowns, later to be known as the Drifters. Under their new name, the band released their first Top 10 hit "There Goes My Baby" in 1959 with Thomas' strong tenor at the vocal forefront. This marked the group's turning point as they headed into their golden age with a string of hits including the No. 1 single "Save the Last Dance For Me." Charlie Thomas and the Drifters have received a number of accolades during their decade-spanning career; with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame a decade later, it comes as no surprise that Rolling Stone named them one of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time." With his profound, rich vocals and incredibly charming stage presence, Thomas delivers an enamoring performance every time he takes the stage. Charlie Thomas' Drifters are back in action as they take fans back in time to the golden age of R&B on their 2014 tour dates.

    The Drifters and Shirelles 2015

by MrSpector on 7/17/15Blue Ocean Music Hall - Salisbury

First of all, when going to these shows you have to consider the age of the artist, Shirley Reeves 74, Charlies Thomas 78...Mick Jagger 70 something... But it's the age of the voice that you should really be concerned about. Most singers maintain it well, and some do not. These two singers still have it. Backed by younger singers who basically sing and move around them make for a pleasant show. Hearing the old hits made famous by these groups is what you want to hear. a little disappointed that they covered other artist material from those same eras - but they did justice to most. did not like the drifters choice of encore song. Shout. they did not do enough of their popular hits. But the backup singers had the great old school moves, in both acts that made up for it.

    Drifters/Shirelles

by DanaJL on 7/15/15Blue Ocean Music Hall - Salisbury

It was a great show. The voices were still there and the moves may have been a bit slower that the were 50 years ago, but they could still shake a leg. I'd go see them again.

    Doo Wop at its best

by wvmusiclover on 3/6/12Keith Albee Theater - Huntington

Totally enjoyed the concert, even though the Drifters were unable to attend. It was still a fabulous show, and I would recommend to anyone who loves the early hits!

    DISAPPOINTED!

by DADDYPAT on 3/5/12Keith Albee Theater - Huntington

MY WIFE AND I ARE BIG FANS. WE WATCH THE PBS SHOWS ON TV MOST OF THE TIME. WITH THE DRIFTERS NOT SHOWING UP AND USING A LOCAL BACK UP BAND I DON'T THINK THE SHOW WAS WORTH WHAT MONEY WE PAID. THE SHOW ONLY LASTED ONE HOUR AND TWENTY MINUTES. I THINK THE SHOW SHOULD HAVE BEEN CANCELLED AND RE-SCHEDULED AT A LATER DATE. I'M NOT SURE IF WE'LL GO AGAIN.

    Somewhat disappointed !!!

by Rob74 on 3/5/12Keith Albee Theater - Huntington

Even thought the 3 acts that performed were very good and enjoyable, we were disappointed by the fact that the headliner couldn't make it and the remaining acts weren't asked to extend their show to compensate. The biggest disappoint was that the venue was changed, without a reason to those that had purchased tickets expecting to be at the Keith Albee, and ending up in a facility more like a high school auditorium.
