About

Calgary Stampeders History

The Calgary Stampeders are the fifth oldest active franchise in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Founded in 1945, success came early for the Stampeders, who completed the CFL’s only perfect 12-0 regular season and secured their first Grey Cup in 1948. Overall, the Calgary Stampeders have appeared in 17 Grey Cup finals and won eight, in 1948, 1971, 1992, 1998, 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018. Notably, the Stamps’ championship victories in 2001 and 2008 also stand as the two highest-attended CFL championship games of the 21st century. Throughout the team’s history, Calgary Stampeders players have claimed 11 Most Outstanding Player Awards, nine Most Outstanding Canadian Awards, six Most Outstanding Rookie Awards, four Most Outstanding Defensive Player Awards and eight Annis Stukus Trophies for the CFL’s top head coach. The Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Elks are included in the multi-league sports rivalry between the two cities, dubbed the Battle of Alberta.

Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium

McMahon Stadium has been the home of the Stampeders since it opened in 1960. The stadium is owned by the University of Calgary and named after two Calgary residents and brothers, Frank McMahon and George McMahon, who helped fund the facility’s construction. McMahon Stadium was the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies and has hosted five Grey Cup finals between 1975, 1993, 2000, 2009 and 2019. The 35,400-seat venue has undergone several expansions and renovations, most notably in 1988, 2001 and 2005. During home games, fans can catch sight of Ralph the Dog, the first mascot of any CFL team, or celebrate a touchdown with the release of a white gelding known as the "Quick Six" horse, who charges along the east sideline.

    Great Value

by Cheryl on 10/16/23McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The Stampeders have very reasonable prices for their games. We had excellent seats for well under $100 each. It was awesome.

    Wouldn’t pick family section again

by małaniedźwiedzica on 10/16/23McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Family section too crowded and shoulder to shoulder with people spilling over into your assigned place on the bench. Would pick actual seats next time. People next to us were constantly touching us and rocking back and forth.

    Stamps vs Sask RR

by WavyBaby on 10/16/23McMahon Stadium - Calgary

We had the best time attending the game and having the opportunity to meet with some players at the stamps house.

    Stamps/Bombers Aug 18, 2023

    by Chris Tazzman on 8/21/23

Still gave the Stamps five stars but that was a tough one due to the weather. Not their fault that it fell to 8 degrees for kick off with a horribly oppressive wind. We had great seats in section I row 12 and I even got a promo code for half off the second seat. However, the cold weather really effected the quality of play, and we only made to half time before we couldn't handle the cold wind hitting us. A tough loss as well for the Stamps 19-18 as well. Better things for Labour Day coming up for sure. We have been lucky for the past two seasons to really have great weather when the Stamps have played. You know eventually there was going to be a night like Friday at some point to come along.

The worst stadium in the CFL.

    by LP on 7/26/23

McMahon Stadium is an embarrassment, full stop. It's easily the worst stadium in the league and is worse than some high school football fields I've been to. Seats are so tight the person's knees behind you are touching your back. There aren't any social spaces (standing room), like none. Alcohol selection is extremely limited and if you're a beer drinker, well, enjoy your selection of Molson, Coors, and Blue Moon. We ordered food and after a few bites realized our dog wouldn't even eat it. Calgary Sports and Entertainment should be fully embarrassed about what's going on in this stadium. To spend $50/ticket to sit in an end zone corner section is laughable and horrible value. I've been a die-hard CFL fan since I was a kid, but I will not be spending my money to go to McMahon again. The one positive is the tailgate in the parking lot. Love this and I wish more stadiums modelled this.

    Staps/Riders June 24, 2023

by Chris Tazzman on 6/27/23McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Great night out, weather was great and close 25000 attend the Riders 29-26 overtime win against the Stamps. My sister and I enjoyed the game. Our seat in section C row 9 seats 21-22 on the aisle were great. A bit slow in the first half the Stamps led 6-3 after a battle of field goals. Both teams really came on in the second half. Paredes tied it in the dying seconds with a 53-yard field goal to set up overtime. The teams exchanged field goals in the first mini game, then the Riders had to settle for three in the second. On second down Jake Maier under pressure tried for his "Falco" moment and connected with Nic Marshall of the Riders in the end zone, Stamps lose.

    In Person beats TV

by JR on 6/27/23McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Had a wonderful time cheering on both teams and really enjoyed the athleticism and energy of the cheerleaders. McMahon is showing its age and could use Jumbotron. Still better than the Saddle-dome.

Stampeders home opener June 8, 2023 versus the BC Lions

by Chris Tazzman on 6/11/23McMahon Stadium - Calgary

A great night out weather started off a bit warm, but it was comfortable after. BC won the game 25-15 and led throughout. My seat in section C row 9 seat 22 was a great spot to see the game. I have to fork out a bit more now my back can't handle the benches and the red seats are a bit too pricey, so I now go with the blue seats, around $83 for most games. The crowd was a bit smaller than expected just over 17,000 was the attendance. It wasn't too long ago we would see at least 24,000 out for a game, I wonder what is with that. They always make the fan experience good, had some local live music that tied into Cowboys Music Fest that they always host over Stampede. There is a lot going on, and it is always a festive atmosphere. I sure enjoy going.

Mcmahon Stadium was a fabulous experience.

by sexyirish on 10/16/22McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The atmosphere was electric, the fans were amiable, and the weather couldn't have been more perfect! Unfortunately the Stampeders lost, but it was a thrilling game nonetheless. I would highly recommend a trip to Calgary's McMahon Stadium to see the Stamps!!
