About

BROOKLYN RIDER IN CONCERT:

With endorsements from the likes of Philip Glass, Bela Fleck, and NPR rounding out their resume, there's little question that NY-based string quartet Brooklyn Rider is one of the freshest young forces in contemporary classical music. The group is known for pushing the boundaries of the classical repertoire with unique arrangements and energetic live performances, and they never cease to amaze with their passion and precision in concert. Whether they're playing revered works by Bartok and Debussy, showcasing their range with selections by Latin rockers Cafe Tacuba, or performing their own original compositions, Brooklyn Rider are a vital force that offer a little something for everyone on their critically acclaimed tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brooklyn Rider formed in their namesake neighborhood in the mid-’00s, quickly taking the NYC art music scene by storm with their fresh take on the string quartet. The group's 2008 debut album Passport was named one of the best classical albums of the year by NPR, and in 2010 they became the first-ever classical act to perform at Austin's edgy SXSW Festival. In 2012 they once again made NPR's best-of list with the album Seven Steps, which included original material alongside a creative interpretation of a Beethoven string quartet. In addition to their acclaimed recordings Brooklyn Rider has collaborated with renowned banjo player Bela Fleck, premiered works by legendary composer Philip Glass, and performed their music at the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. In 2014 the quartet released The Brooklyn Rider Almanac LP to another round of praise, and they continue to breathe new life into classical music with their inventive performances on tour.

    I didn’t know better!

by Old enough to know better on 2/6/23Centennial Hall - Tucson

The violinists and the percussionist were all pretty good. Unfortunately they were accompanying Ms. Herrera. I really cannot describe her singing only to say it was not pleasant and had little variation in the unpleasantness. This was the first concert we ever walked out of.

    So, Brooklyn Rider is Incredible…

by LizaTulip on 2/6/23Centennial Hall - Tucson

Brooklyn Rider is so underrated. A progressive string quartet, BR collaborated with many artists and envisions musical projects in unique ways. Listening to their musicianship brought me near tears multiple times. Not sure if Magos Herrera was not miked properly or if there was some other issue. My friend and I just could not get into her singing. We found it primarily monotone and mostly unintelligible. Tuning her out and listening to BR was absolutely the way to go for this show.

Genius is okay if it's really good.

by redbeard46 on 11/15/13E.J. Thomas Hall - The University of Akron - Akron

Do you like string quartet interpretation of classical and jazz original composition? If you do then this is the absolute best. An extraordinary quartet with the best banjo picker in the world amaze with their virtuosity. So why did I give this only 3 stars? Well the truth is I found only half of the music entertaining. Admittedly I am no jazz aficionado but this was just a bit too dissonant for my taste. Also, I felt like this concert was not produced well by EJ Thomas in that there was insufficient amplification. This was especially evident during Bela Fleck's solos, a major disappointment. We were in the center of. The grand tier, row K, and could not hear. I am a huge fan of Bela and applaud this joining of talent but more energy and musicality would be appreciated.

Brooklyn Rider is astounding. Sixth & I is one of the most beautiful venues in the D.C. area within which one can routinely have an intimate experience with many a first-class act. The night was pitch perfect.
