    A great event!

by Baros on 12/21/11Library of Congress - Washington

The Borromeo concert with Seymour Lipkin at the piano was fabulous! It was quite amazing to see and hear 4 original Stratavarius instruments played with Apple computers and foot pedals supplying the music and page turns. The performance was outstanding, as was the pre-concert talk with Gunther Schuller. My only criticism is that there was a drone in the auditorium which was a bit annoying. This was mentioned in the Post's review and should be corrected, if possible. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful concert!

Came for the Strads, stayed for the quartet

by NotGS on 12/19/11Library of Congress - Washington

We booked this event because it was an opportunity to see some of the Library of Congress collection of Stradivarius instruments. It turned out to be a great evening of music with an absolutely brilliant quartet (oh, and the Strads were pretty impressive too). Sitting in front of the composer of one of the pieces was a serendipitous delight.

    Borromeo Quartet with others

by WishIhadremembered on 12/19/11Library of Congress - Washington

The Quartet was great to see and hear. The Stradivari instruments were a joy to see, and I'll accept the expert's opinion that they sound better. I didn't hear a sour note. Watching the music be displayed from images of the original Beethoven's manuscripts, described by the players as allowing direct reinterpretation from Beethoven's own intents, and shown on Macintosh computers, was inspirational. The 86 year old composer of his own string quartet, Mr. Schuller, and the 85 year old pianist Seymour Lipkin were a treat to see and hear. Mr. Lipkin's performance of the Beethovan Sonata #7 was inspirational and musically beautiful.
