Great music and exceptional performance in a memorable concert that set the bar really high for future jazz/rock bands appearing in San Antonio! Can't wait for Booker T to perform in San Antonio again!

    Booker T: Soul Evolution

by GuitarGus on 4/11/14Charline McCombs Empire Theatre - San Antonio

Booker T is a great musician whose influence has spanned decades and whose music has stood the test of time. As composer and arranger his gifts still are intact as he continues to create and innovate. Booker T. Jones and band did not disappoint as they covered the arc of his career not as historical re-en actors but as musicians presenting the music as fresh and vital as a part of the present not as a shining artifact of the past. Certainly the nay sayers will argue that the MG's with the MarKays were missed as Booker T is touring with a younger three piece but the counter argument to that is quite simple: Booker T Jones is still a living, active, creative, and touring musician not a "revival piece". The musicians did not disappoint as the skill set possessed by each of them extended beyond simple robotic reproduction with technique that was deep but not overplayed. One could call it a study in subtlety as each in their turn took solos that were rich in tone and texture but never overpowering the main event: the song itself. The revelation of the evening was Booker T. Jones himself as not only he displayed his mastery of the Hammond B-3 organ but his singing and guitar playing, both of which were studies in elegant presentation. His voice was mellifluous imbuing the lyrics with a resonance that could best be described as "Cello-esque". His guitar playing was a marvel of efficiency with not a note wasted and if one were to truly listen displayed a level of mastery that younger players would do well to emulate. If one were looking for memories and ghosts of ones storied past and the "good old days" one could be forgiven for being disappointed at some level. But if you really listened, Booker T. Jones and company proved the "good days" are here and now.

What a great evening. From the setting of the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre to the performance itself. Booker T is still a great performer and his musicians were fantastic.

    Nice show, but misleading.

Truth be told, I came here to see Anthony Hamilton. I'd been trying to find a show of his and this came up on my Tickemaster search. I saw the other names on the ticket, but would have never guessed that I was paying to watch the Booker T variety show and that Anthony Hamilton would only perform 2 songs, neither of which were his. There were a lot of child appearances (Booker T's son, Bill Wither's daughter) neither of which blew me away. There were some surprise appearances, (Ledisi, Poncho Sanchez) but they did one song max. Basically this was the Booker T and Friends reunion and if that's your bag, this is the show for you. All the Anthony Hamilton fans left disappointed and left as soon as he walked off the stage. Disappointing.

We wanted to hear him play.

by BigDaddyCain on 5/14/11The GRAMMY Museum - Los Angeles

The interview dialogue was too long and musical selections too short. Most of us that were of age when he came up, wanted to hear more of his discography. We knew it was to be scripted as a combination interview and performance, but it was not balanced.
