    Watson show was FORGETTABLE...

by Anonymous on 5/21/13Blue Room - Kansas City

We have gone many times to the Blue Room over the last 13 years and enjoyed ourselves every time until last Saturday when we went to Bobby Watson's show...We were looking forward to a great night of jazz & blues but were given a disappointing eulogy, presented by a Mr. North, about how blacks are still slaves and the payment for past wrongs is yet to be paid...The statement which included both Dr. Martin and Trayvon Martin as somehow being comparable I found totally unacceptable...We were forewarned that the whites in the room, (nearly 85%) were going to be uncomfortable was an understatement...I believe the eulogy was inappropriate, incorrect, & was poorly written & poorly presented...We did not spend our hard earned money to listen to some person talk about racism, we went to hear great music...

    Great evening of jazz

by bigdancehawk on 7/11/12Blue Room - Kansas City

This was our first visit to the Blue Room, and we'll certainly be coming back. The cover charge was only $5 per person. Some nights it's more; some nights it's free. We were greeted cordially and seated promptly at about 7:15 on the upper level. The lower level was already full, even though the band hadn't yet taken the stage. There was no server in sight, so I just went to the bar and bought a couple of drinks. After that, the server came to our table several times and was fairly prompt in bringing our drinks, even though the place was full. The drinks are cheap and not watered down. The manager visited our table several times to make sure we were OK. The staff is a very warm and friendly bunch. They seem genuinely glad you came and they want you to come back. This isn't one of those big, impersonal nightclubs. The atmosphere is pleasant and cozy, but not tight. I thought they could have turned down the upper level lighting a little more. They have some lighted displays of jazz memorabilia, posters, photos and such lining the walls, and the lighting on those needs to be shielded better so it doesn't hit people directly in the eyes. But it's all about the music. Bobby Watson is a world class jazz sax player. The band was BIG (about 17 pieces, give or take) and produced a BIG sound, but not painfully so. They were really on from the start and it just got better as the night progressed. I think we heard at least one solo by each band member and they were all good. I thought the drummer was particularly outstanding. So was the pianist and several of the trumpet players. Of course, Bobby was the star, but he didn't dominate like some band leaders tend to do. And he kept his remarks brief and few. Unfortunately, we had to leave only after about 2-1/2 hours. I wish we could have stayed until closing.

Wonderful performance by two veteran entertainers. There were four of us, and we all thought it was fabulous entirely. I was completely satisfied in all respects, and I would hear them again. The back-up boys were quite talented as well. All in all, wonderful evening.
