About

About Bobby Rush in Concert

Bluesman Bobby Rush embodies the idea that you’re only as old as you feel. When he became more popular than ever in his eighties, he was consistently bringing his fans a live show - one as full of vitality as any you’d see from a performer a quarter his age. Rush doesn’t just stand there and sing, he really pulls out the stops for his ever-growing audience. When he’s not throwing emotion into his singing and harmonica playing, he’s cavorting with his female dancers, telling riveting stories and engaging in a give-and-take with the crowd that makes everybody in the room feel part of the evening’s event. With his crack band serving up Rush’s signature blend of funky grooves, soulful tunes and timeless blues, a Bobby Rush show isn’t just a concert, it’s an experience.

Bobby Rush Background

If Bobby Rush’s life were a movie, nobody would believe it was a true story. Born in Louisiana in 1933, he ended up in Arkansas, where he befriended blues icon Elmore James and played with legendary pianist Pinetop Perkins. When he made his way to Chicago during that city’s blues heyday, he was palling around with historic figures like Jimmy Reed and Muddy Waters. The wider world got a taste of Rush’s signature blend of soul, funk and blues (eventually dubbed “soul blues” by the media) with his 1971 hit “Chicken Heads,” which would have a second life decades later in the film Black Snake Moan. Rush’s first album was produced and cowritten by Philly soul godhead Leon Huff. Long after becoming a hero of the soul blues circuit, Rush relocated to Mississippi, and he eventually tapped into the Delta blues tradition with his 2020 album Rawer Than Raw. But before that, he won his first-ever Grammy at age 83 for his funky, retro-soul album Porcupine Meat, proving his appeal is truly timeless.

    The Truth

by Sugar Babe on 3/2/23Ritz Theatre - Jacksonville

I attended the show and was greatly surprised that the band was not with him. The show was more Folk-lorish than a natural show. He performed very well alone. The foot stomping along with the rifts from his guitar were fascinating. I enjoyed the show. A lot of story telling in his music. His comedy and interaction with the audience made a good show. This was my third time seeing him in concert. Maybe I'm old fashion and bands don't accompany the artist any more. But, that's not true as I have attended shows before and recently and the bands were there. He didn't say why he was performing alone. Overall, the show was good. No, he didn't have his dancers with him.

    Disappointed

by Liz on 1/25/23Ritz Theatre - Jacksonville

We purchased tickets to the Bobby Rush show because my wife loves his music and at his age he may not have many more shows in him before retiring. When we got there we were surprised to see a guitar by itself on stage and we thought it was for an opening act. It wasn't. A gentleman came out and introduced Bobby Rush who slowly walked on stage as if his body hurt. He picked up the guitar and proceeded to strum some chords and talk. Talked about his age, how he was the only original blues singer left, ect. He talked, talked some more and started to sing to his guitar and foot stomping accompaniment. No band, no back-up singers or dancers. Just him, his off-colored jokes and nothing else. Not what we paid $102 for. After waiting for anything or anyone else to join him on stage, we walked out at my wife's insistance and several other audience members followed us. Total waste of money and 2-hr drive. I wish I could get a refund.

    Bobby Rush the Legend

    by P. W. on 1/25/23Ritz Theatre - Jacksonville

We had seen Bobby with his full band, but this was just Bobby with an acoustic guitar, harmonica and 88 years of blues experience. Living History at it's finest!

    Amazing venue, great personable performer

by K. R. on 12/21/21Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - Portsmouth

Loved the show. The time flew by. Bobby Rush tells stories in between his songs and they help the audience get to know him and his history and how it influences his music. Great show. The venue was A+

I love Bobby! I really missed his band as I think that's what makes him who he is. However, I did enjoy his storytelling and acoustic show. The venue was superb!

    Great Venue, Great performer!

by Melina B on 12/21/21Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - Portsmouth

It was our first time seeing Bobby Rush as well as our first time at Jimmy's Jazz and Blues Club! The performance was awesome! I would highly recommend seeing Bobby Rush if he comes around again! Bobby put on a great show and was available after the show and signed books and CD's! The venue was amazing! Our waiter was great and the food was delicious. The space was clean and inviting and the updates that they have done to the historic building are beautiful. One thing that I would say is that on ticketmaster when purchasing tickets it doesn't show you that there is a wall between the stage and the sky bar, you cannot see the stage at all you are in a closed off separate room, this was very disappointing, there are 2 TV's in that room for you to watch the show. We were able to talk with the manager who was amazing and actually got us seats in the main room! The venue went above and beyond for us and it was appreciated! I would highly recommend Jimmy's!

Everything was excellent....glad it was postponed til Friday

by Beverly Wolfe-Davis on 7/5/21Levitt Shell at Overton Park - Memphis

We wer in POD #12, excellent seating. My fellow podders were 2 of my best friend, 2 sisters and my 76 year old mother. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The temperature was just right for July. The space between each Pod was adequate for this COVID season.
