Story line adequate (saw the movie so it was understandable). Dialects, especially by the child actors, were contrived and difficult to follow. Music was forgettable. Gratuitous attempts at humor failed. Young man who portrayed Billy was delightful. So disappointed in the rest of the show.
I thought it was an amazing show! The songs were awesome, and the actors were phenomenal. Ben Cook was the Billy I saw, and he did great! I have only seen one other Billy live, but between the two, Ben was the best. Everything was great from a technical standpoint as well. I am involved in theater tech, so I notice when things aren't right. The lighting was near perfect: played a role in the show, but not overbearing. The sound was also near perfect: there were MAYBE 2-3 missed cues. I was sitting near the back in orchestra seating, and I could hear everything perfectly. 2 or 3 songs were pretty loud for effect like the Angry Dance, the Dream Ballet, and Once We Were Kings. People just have to remember what kind of show this is: one with strong language. The site recommends no one under 8, but I would say no one under Billy's age (11-12). Don't come expecting a show from Disney and written for young kids, because it is not. The actors speak in the accent of the time and place, as well as the language - including the swearing. Unfortunately, this has put a lot of people off. The only con I can think of was that the Intermission was really too short. 15 minutes was not enough time for everyone in the house to use the restroom, and buy candy. Would I recommend the show? ABSOLUTELY! I have seen it twice, and I am hoping that I get another chance to see it at least once.
This was by far one of the worst plays I have seen...if someone were to ask me what it was about I would say the coal miners strike in England...NOT about a boy who rather dance than box. Terrible production. I do not understand why it received so many accolades. I tell people not to waste their money on a ticket.
My wife likes ballet and absolutely LOVED this show. The contrast of the hardships and conflicts of the mine workers interspersed with the "life goes on" of the ballet classes really spoke to her. I had never seen a ballet, and that part did not really talk to me, but I appreciated the acting and the story. The only two downsides we could see are that there are a few "f-bombs" (and there were many kids in the audience as we went to a matinee), and it seemed to glorify smoking. Almost all adults smoked in the play, and the smoke was used as enhancements in some of the dance routines. These aside, my wife had anticipated this for quite some time, and it not only fulfilled her expectations, it far exceeded them.
Very good! Lots of dancing (which I love). Sometimes the accent was hard to understand but it was a very touching story.
Great story, fabulous dancing, and entertaining for the whole family - our 2 teenagers didn't want to go, and ended up loving it!
Dancing was very good and exceeded expectations. Some of the changes in the stage version were a bit disappointing, especially cutting the last scene of the movie, where the adult Billy leaps on stage in Swan Lake. The theater seats were terribly uncomfortable, which detracted from the experience.
I didn't enjoy the story or the English accents. It made it hard to understand.
The musical was great. Extremely entertaining . Great Actors, music and dancing.
