    Beautiful

by Anonymous on 8/6/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I would gladly go to anything that the Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane Company produced. The dancing was perfection, the music so good, the theme, story, ideas were profound. Thought provoking, interesting, beautiful, memorable!

    Exemplary contemporary dance

by TallbootsK on 8/1/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

We attended the final performance of what was a trilogy performed over three consecutive nights which requires remarkable versatility and stamina from the performers. I use the word "performer" because the group not only danced, but narrated, sang, managed the stage and props, and articulated within and among innovative lighting, sound and video. The title "The Immigrant" referred to the ephemerality of time and memory, how we choose to identify with and know the meaning of our lives often through the imagined and reimagined history of others in a kind of emmigration. The complexity of translating such abstract ideas into the materiality of the stage required enormous creativity of the choreographer, dancers and technicians. The intertwining narratives kept the audience riveted on the fugue of expression on stage. "The Immigrant" required a great of focus and mental participation of the audience both during and after the performance.

    Another brilliant and breathtaking story!

by samcib on 7/14/15DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

This performance didn't disappoint! The story was incredibly balanced of difficulties and joy. The movement and partner work was gorgeous and absolutely beautiful, and the music production a wonderful addition. I'm so extremely impressed - it made me reflect, it filled me up. I can't speak enough about this performance! Still actively thinking about my experience days later.

An Oral Story Brought To Life!

by Penny0875 on 7/14/15DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I was not expecting to see a story told orally to come to life in the way that the ensemble danced and told it. So moving! The lady sitting beside me really identified with the story line plus the power that it was danced . . . so much so that she was moved to tears! Although the story told is not MY history, its theme is MY history . . . one of man's inhumanity to man.

    A Less Than Exciting Evening

by Throwslikeagirl on 3/12/15Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Perhaps this was a problem of too many cooks. There were some real taste problems here. It wasn't a rite of spring to remember.

A Rite - Blew my mind!

by Jessessa on 3/11/15Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

The blending of theater and dance was brilliant and seemless in this piece. The riffs on A Rite Of Spring were surprising, intriguing and inspiring. A true representation of humanity and chaos embodied by their beautiful and expressive bodies. I loved the text about space and time. And the final image could have gone on a lot longer - the soldier running back and forth behind the strips of fabric. It had just started to look strobey when the curtain was coming down.

    Rite was wrong

by depechealamode on 3/10/15Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

I am a dancer in my heart. Ballet was my life from 4-20 years of age. So I am not a newcomer to the dance world. But this was not enjoyable at all! Parts of it were interesting. And because I appreciate what I *think* the choreographer was trying to do I gave it 2 stars. But honestly I felt like I wasted my money. Again, the dancing was proficient but I would have rather seen the dancing only. I think the challenge for me was the acting. Again, parts of it were interestig but overall I think they just tried to do too much. Like making a stew with too many ingredients. Something is lost. And I might be alone on this, but it's a little annoying for the art community to be avant garde to the extent that they lose their audience but are so proud of themselves that they can't see that their strange piece of artwork is NOT enjoyable. And I get that some artists want to make art that is uncomfortable but if I'm going to spend $60 on a ticket I want ENTERTAINMENT not commentary on war or time-space continuum. It was exhausting!
