About

BIG SAM'S FUNKY NATION IN CONCERT:

Trombone titan Big Sam brings together the best of funk, rock, and jazz with his band Big Sam's Funky Nation. The group of ace players has treated fans to their party-worthy live show at festivals around the world, and they continue to keep fans moving and shaking on their must-see tours. From the upbeat bounce of "Hard to Handle" to the blaring brass of "Cissy Strut", Big Sam and Co. always keep the energy high and the horns wailing at their unforgettable live shows.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

New Orleans-born Sammie "Big Sam" Williams took to the trombone at an early age, receiving formal instruction on the instrument while attending the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts as a youth. In his teens he founded the Stooges Brass Band, and before long he was playing in the legendary Dirty Dozen Brass Band. In the early '00s he formed Big Sam's Funky Nation, a talented group of players with whom he developed a unique jazz rock hybrid. The band established itself with albums like Birth of a Nation (2003) and Peace Love & Understanding (2008), but their true claim to fame was their electrifying live shows. The band's critically acclaimed festival appearances include Bonnaroo, Voodoo Music Experience, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and they continue to get ticket buyers on their feet every time they take the stage on tour.

Big Sam doesn't take it very far north

by CarmineDeMille on 7/18/17Fete de Marquette - Madison

I was pretty stoked to see Big Sam's Funky Nation, but if you plan on seeing or booking them, I would recommend double-checking to see what ensemble will actually show up to the gig. The "Big Booty" YouTube video features incredible drumming, organ, and another horn player. The act that made it up to Madison, WI last weekend had no organ, no additional horn player, and a very young drummer who did little more than stay on the beat. A spirited attempt by the guitarist to make up for all the missing parts almost worked, but he couldn't keep it up. The super-hyper kinetic stage antics didn't make up for it either. I'm guessing they got to split the gig money three ways rather than six - so good for them - I guess...

    Big Sam always brings it

by Greenbaum on 1/14/13Brighton Music Hall - Boston

Such a great show as always. Played both Hard to Handle and Cissy Strut. Can't wait to see him in New Orleans again.
