Beware of Darkness decimates all other bands!

by SteveInSouthCarolina on 10/26/16Masquerade - Atlanta

A few of us audience members in Atlanta had seen Beware of Darkness previously during the week as they opened for The Struts. Beware of Darkness was impressive enough to bring out people for their own headlining show at Hell at The Masquerade. I had been anticipating a new album and tour for the last couple of years and had a great time seeing the band again. Ten Dollar Empire opened the show playing songs with solid funk grooves. They were followed by The Jumping Jackalope, an original band driven by an allegiance to the raw, pre-punk sounds of Link Wray or The Stooges. Both bands shared the same drummer. Beware of Darkness started playing on the small stage just after 9:30. For a solid hour they played most of the new album, Are You Real?, and three songs from the previous album, Orthodox. As with all Beware of Darkness shows the guys put more energy into their performance than most bands. Kyle Nicolaides let his emotions take over both musically and physically in every song, gesturing naturally to express himself. Each song was on the verge of being an intense jam session. Everyone knew where they could take liberties and jam within each song, but they kept close to the album arrangements. Dan Curcio balanced the stage visually with an equal fervid performance. Had the stage been larger the audience would have seen them moving around much more. Tony Cupito was only limited by the fact that drum sets rarely move well during a rock and roll show. He certainly matched Kyle and Dan in elevating the excitement for the show. The Atlanta Beware of Darkness show made a wonderful Saturday night.
