BENJI HUGHES IN CONCERT:
Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Benji Hughes has collaborated with big names like Jeff Bridges and Michelle Ndegeocello, but lately it’s his evocative solo work that fans are flocking to. The introspective singer’s sparse piano arrangements, subdued vocals, and winding melodies evoke the work of beloved songsmiths like Jon Bryan, but weird-wonderful tunes like “Girl in the Tower” and “How Many Birds” have ensconced Hughes in a camp of his own. Hughes released four – yes FOUR – albums in 2014 including a children’s concept album set in outer space, so ticket buyers can look forward to plenty of new material as he hits the road on tour in 2015.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
North Carolina-born Benji Hughes originally worked as a housepainter before his songwriting skills and ability to play multiple instruments caught the eye of New West Records president Cameron Strang. After joining the label’s roster in the mid-'00s Hughes headed off to the hip Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles to write and record his debut album. The result was 2007’s A Love Extreme, a double-disc album of painstakingly crafted, folk-influenced rock and pop that established him as a powerful new voice in American songwriting. Several of the album’s songs appeared on popular television shows like How I Met Your Mother and Eastbound and Down, and soon Hughes was performing as a session musician for artists like Jeff Bridges and Michelle Ndegeocello. In 2014 he released four albums via his website – XXOXOXX, Songs in the Key of Animals, OXOXOXOXOX, and LILILIL – an impressive feat that has fans dying to catch the new tunes on tour.
