About

Throughout the last fifteen years, Beach Fossils have steadily earned their stature as one of the most definitive and enduring bands of the 2010s New York underground, consistently reaching new listeners as their sound has grown from the DIY solo project of Dustin Payseur to an influential four-piece dream pop band, self-produced and self-released.

Bunny (2023) continues the stunning evolution of Beach Fossils' sound, pulling elements from the jangly melancholy of the self-titled debut Beach Fossils (2010) and What a Pleasure (2011), the gritty, post-punk inspired tracks from Clash the Truth (2013), and the lush arrangements of Somersault (2017). Throughout, Payseur is joined by core band members Tommy Davidson (guitar), Jack Doyle Smith (bass), and Anton Hochheim (drums).

Through tone and mood, Beach Fossils communicate a coming-of-age narrative of self-discovery. Payseur's slice-of-life lyrics reflect on depression, love, adventure, loss, mistakes, New York City, friendships coming and going -- a mélange of granular pieces in the process of continuing to find yourself.

    Muddy

by Ron on 4/21/24Revolution Live - Ft Lauderdale

Sorry to say this band of talents sound better on their recorded material. After listening to the crisp clean synth sound of opening band Nation of Language, Beach Fossils sounded muddy, over modulated and poorly mixed. Note to sound man: lower the band’s volume and it will allow for a cleaner more accessible mix. The band themselves appeared onstage somewhat smug, disinterested, and uninspired as they rolled along from one song to the next in front of a large paying crowd at Revolution. I like Beach Fossils. Their recorded music is refreshing and creative. Live though…not so much.

    Great Opener, So-so Main

by Gmac94 on 4/20/24House of Blues Orlando - Orlando

Really enjoyed Nation of Language but Beach Fossils were so-so. And enough of the Disney jokes, we get it. Just lame.

    A fun, high energy show

by CV on 4/17/24The Parish At House of Blues New Orleans - New Orleans

The Beach Fossils set was awesome. Great energy and an excellent mix of old and new songs on the setlist. The band was tight. Nation of Language was a fantastic opening act. The energy level all night for both bands was perfect and both bands had the crowd engaged the whole set. The venue was clean and had easy access to the bar. The venue (The Parrish at HOB)was a little small for the number of people at the show - wish it was in the bigger space however the tight space created a more engaged crowd. I am still not sure why so many people go to see shows and want to talk the whole time the band is playing. In closing - great show!

Beach Fossils and Nation of Language played a wonderful show, in the perfect venue. Sound was fantastic, as was the energy throughout.

Fun night but coulda been better

by Tbreese on 4/10/24Mercury Ballroom - Louisville

The ticket was cheap and I bought it last minute but there were a lot of things that coulda been better. Beach Fossils said this was their third stop on tour, and I'm not sure if that means they were still working out the kinks but there were kinks. They got the first cord of Social Jetlag embarrassingly wrong and it ruined the song for me. They also were tuning their guitars between every song. The sound mixing by Mercury Ballroom/the band's guy was also not perfect. The amps were so loud for one song you could hear it clipping and over-modulating. Still some very good songs and the singer was top-notch. But a lot of things brought it down.

Fun sold out show but venue understaffed

by Laura on 11/28/239:30 CLUB - WASHINGTON

I have not been to the 9:30 Club in probably 5 years. I appreciate that they have added a paid parking lot close by. There were only 2 bands on the bill and the music started with a line still wrapped around the block. We missed all but the last song of the opener we came to see. The venue was just severely understaffed and the capacity for the venue is too high. The headliner clearly felt rushed too because the venue does an early and a late show and there was a disagreement in the pit they felt they had to address. I hope to see Beach Fossils and Turnover at a different venue in the future.

    In the end…

by Lj on 11/23/23Citizens House of Blues Boston - Boston

The opening band was pure garbage. I almost didn’t make it to see Beach Fossils because Turnover was so bad. On the last song they performed, guitarist literally dragged his live guitar-strings down - across the stage like something out of a bad movie. Then a 180 as Beach Fossils came out and played beautifully.
