    Barrymore was pure entertainment

by actorsfan on 3/6/11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Christopher Plummer can command a stage like no other and his portrayal in Barrymore is a perfect example of what an actor is and should be. The writer's ability to tell a biographical story through commentary and anecdotes makes you feel at the end that you know John Barrymore. Convincing and entertaining.

    Experience of a Lifetime

by toscasmom on 3/6/11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I consider seeing Christopher Plummer in Barrymore as one of those life events that only a few of us are lucky enough to experience. Both actor and subject are consummate Shakepearian actors at a turning point in their lives and the irony fills the stage throughout what is essentially a mesmerizing two act soliloquy. Plummer is magnificent and every line he speaks makes one wonder what he is thinking about his own career and the fact that he is towards the end of his own life and career. An amazing performance by an amazing actor about yet another amazing actor! I am so glad that Mr Plummer's performance will be filmed so that many others can experience and marvel at it for many generations to come.

    Plummer gets better with age!!!!

by LPalm on 2/18/11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I saw this play twice when Christopher Plummer played Barrymore at Stratford. I can only say that Christopher has gotten better with age. It is a wonderful evening of entertainment that should not be missed!

    Far more than Barrymore

by bdickson on 2/14/11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

School was in, ladies and gentlemen; and Mr. Plummer conducted a master class. What a magnificent display of a talent so relentless and beguiling as to risk being declared illegal. It was a performance that will rightly be remembered among the pinnacles of theatrical history in any city, let alone an impossibly fortunate Toronto, Canada. Thank you, Christopher Plummer, for sharing your astonishing wit, command, poise, stamina and incomparable brilliance with us in measures beyond all bounds of generosity. Thanks, also, to your intrepid co-star, John Plumpis, who - as foil to Plummer's spectacularly misspent waystral - provided a counterpoint worthy of a Bach fugue gone hilariously and disarmingly ribald.

    Barrymore Comes To Life

by Daffers on 2/12/11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

What an extraordinary experience to see a living legend playing with such ease, an icon of the classic movie era. Christopher Plummer seems to slip into the skin of the troubled yet endlessly entertaining John Barrymore. The play is written with great humour and respect for the man known as 'The Profile'. Plummer as Barrymore is outrageous, egotistical and troubled. It was as if you were the only one sitting in the audience as this actor's actor shared his humour and his pain with you.

    Barrymore more than I imagined!

by Theatrica on 2/9/11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Christopher Plummer brilliantly portrays a charming roué whose ribald storytelling masks a well of regrets and fears.

    a wonderful performance

by leepat on 2/7/11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I enjoyed the monologue so much that the only disappoint I had was that it ended too soon. I wished it were longer but I imagine that a one person performance is difficult. I enjoyed the lines and the delivery.

    BARRYMORE

by TARPMEISTER on 2/7/11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I AM TRULY AMAZED EACH TIME I WATCH CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER PERFORM...LAST YEAR AT STRATFORD IN THE TEMPEST AND NOW IN BARRYMORE...HE STEPS INTO THE CHARACTER AND BECOMES THE CHARACTER...I HONESTLY FELT THAT HE WAS BARRYMORE ON THAT LAST ATTEMPT TO RESURRECT A LANGUISHING CAREER...I ACTUALLY FELT A TWINGE OF SADNESS AT THE VERY END WHEN HE RECOGNIZES THAT HE IS TRULY FINISHED, AND THE AUDIENCE KNOWS HE ONLY HAS A MONTH TO LIVE....HE IS A TRUE CANADIAN GEM AND I HOPE HE PERFORMS FOREVER....

    A class performance!

by Buzzalot on 2/6/11Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I really enjoyed seeing Christopher Plummer on stage again. He WAS Barrymore and it was a little shocking to see him as himself again at the end of the show. I wasn't certain how he would portray the egotistical, self-destructive and brilliance of the appealing Barrymore but those traits came across crystal clear. I googled both John Barrymore and Christopher Plummer when I got home to educate myself some more but the information I got from the stage was a lot more memorable and interesting!
