Amazing - absolutely amazing and beautiful

by Patroclus on 3/1/22The Soraya (The Valley's Center for the Performing Arts) - Northridge

I'd say ballet informed but in no way classical ballet - not judging that. Opening scenes from Romeo/Juliet [Prokofiev] - real chemistry between the two principals, clearly not teenagers - thank goodness. Justin Rapaport is just about as beautiful as a man gets and it's rare that a guy built like that can actually dance. The AMAZING thing though was the piece called The Statement. To a scripted Kafkaesque/Orwellian narrative/soundscape trying to get to the bottom of an unnamed scenario that went very wrong, 4 dancers perform highly stylized movements around a conferee room table. with the synchronization of a drum line, the intensity of this work builds to a tense and dramatic climax leaving you feeling like you've just been in a car wreck. If you've worked in an office setting and your boss is an as***le, you will be totally involved and immersed in this piece. Totally unexpected, engaging, and profound. Can't remember the last number, more conventional contemporary dance with the whole company - it was good and worth seeing, but I was still shaken up and left dull by The Statement. thanks folks for a terrific evening.

    Fabulous

by RhonaF on 3/1/22The Soraya (The Valley's Center for the Performing Arts) - Northridge

The company displayed wonderful artistry in a program that ranged from lyrical to thought-provoking. Crystal Pites “Statement” is a worthy heir to Kurt Joos “The Green Table” a staple of the Joffrey Ballet. A unique anti-war ballet to a monologue worthy of David Mamet.

Each of the three ballets was wonderful. Exciting choreography and well performed. The Soraya had excellent mask compliance procedures.

BC Ballet Romeo and Juliet, March 7/20 @Queen Eliz Theatre

by Phil on 5/21/20Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

*** Five Stars. *** This was truly an amazing avant-garde ballet. We have always loved the BC Ballet productions, especially the Nutcracker, but this surpassed them all to become our new favourite ballet. The dancers, sets, music and direction were all first-class. We urge everyone to catch this production if they can in future. Also, kudos to the Queen E ushers. My wife started coughing uncontrollably when the ballet began, so we left quickly. To our surprise, a man who may have been the Head Usher led us to a sound-proof room from where we watched the ballet, in private. We expected no special treatment, so we thank him and his team for this wonderful experience.

wonderful new choreography to an old story.

by 3gens on 3/9/20Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

The piece flowed so smoothly it was over too soon. The difficulty of the dance was made to seem effortless and ethereal.

    A brilliant performance

by Brien on 3/7/20Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

The music of Prokofiev is a wonderful counterpoint to Shakespeare,s immortal story of Romeo and Juliet and Ballet B. C. presented an outstanding performance with superb dancing and choreography,a great minimalist set and highly effective lighting. The crowd scenes were amazing and the still moments were like a Renaissance masterwork.
