Misrepresented as a ballet. It was a play with a CD that skipped for the music and local kids with no ballet skills as the actors.

If you are expecting a classic rendition, full of ballet this is not the one for you. They are doing amazing and wonderful things by including special needs children. That is to be commended however, this was my daughters first Nutcracker and we were expecting something quite different.

    Ballet (?) Academy --- Nutcracker 2012

by Pepperaz on 12/26/12Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

This was probably the biggest disappointment for my granddaughter and myself all year. I am not belittling what these kids have accomplished---it was amazing what these teachers have taught them to do and the utter joy they have brought to these kids and their parents. However-------this was advertised as "Ballet Academy of Arizona Nutcracker". I have been promising my granddaughter for 2 years to take her. She was all dressed in her finest clothes in anticipation of seeing white tu-tus dancing across the stage, the sugar plum fairy, the toy soldier and all the other characters associated with the Nutcracker story. When we discovered that this was a benefit for cerebral palsy children, my heart went out to them as they did their best to cavort around the stage in some semblance of "dance". My granddaughter is 8---too young to appreciate what she was seeing. The only sentiment she was feeling was disappointment. I chastise the Orpheum for their false advertisement of this production. Many people exited the show after the first act. We visited outside and all were of the same opinion. This should have been advertised for what it was instead of misleading the public into thinking this was the real McCoy. I will think twice before attending a function at the Orpheum again.

    absolutely misleading event

by Anonymous on 12/25/12Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

This show had nothing to do with Ballet. It was never advertised that handicapped people would be running around on stage in a crazy and uncoordinated fashion. My grandchildren, husband and I were so disappointed that we left at half time amongst a lot of other people. This show was falsely advertised and we should receive our money back. We would have never bought these tickets if we had know what kind of persons were performing. There was not one performance in that "Ballet" that was worth spending a dime on. I was so embarrased in front of my grandkids. Unbelievable

    What a special production!

    by Yaya1984567 on 12/25/12Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

Do not buy tickets to this expecting a Ballet Arizona performance. This is a different production, and it is a very special one. The cast consists of people of different ages and sizes (not just tiny professional ballerinas), and dancers of various levels of experiences. Additionally, this production gives people with special needs the opportunity to participate and everyone did a GREAT job! I felt the production could have been better if the music tracks had been of better quality (some of the tracks were scratchy, and in this digital age, there is no reason why new tracks cannot be easily downloaded), and also the academy instructor kept running on stage to help position some of the child dancers in a pencil skirt and a blouse (I think she should have dressed up in a stage outfit if she was planning on running out on stage). Overall, the performance had its own endearing qualities and charm, so it was well worth the price.

    Ballet Academy Nutcracker

by asualum on 12/25/12Orpheum Theatre - Phoenix

We are ardent supporters of charities in the valley, donating regularly to the Salvation Army, Goodwill and the Rescue Mission and we have great compassion for those that have been dealt less than a fair shake in life. We do not, however, want to buy tickets to a Nutcracker performance to which we are taking our grandchildren, expecting a traditional version, and having to explain to a 3 and 5 year old why the children are in wheelchairs or have funny expressions. The disabilities of many of the children and young adults was, while their performances were admirable, extremely distracting and took the joy out of our grandchildren's first Nutcracker experience. All of this would have been totally acceptable HAD WE BEEN NOTIFIED UP FRONT what to expect. The fact that there was no notice, no warning NOTHING as to the skill level of the performers and participants is completely UNACCEPTABLE.

Not at all as advertised. Left with a very disappointed grand daughter and daughters from out of state and country at intermission

I paid $140 to watch 125 kids that were the ages Between 3 and 12, which 75 were special Need kids. There nothing wrong with that But there was nothing saying this was not A professional performance! This was Also poorly produced. DO NOT waste you money!

An exciting and wonderful experience for all, children and adults, involved. Many hands and hearts are involved in the production.
