This is the second time we have seen this ballet company, and once again it did not disappoint. Three acts of non-traditional ballet gave the audience a different perspective on appreciating how dance can unlock the soul. Act 1 seemed to be an expose on rhythm, lighting, and percussion instruments. It was as much a visual and sound experience.
Act 2 was the most unusual of the three acts. Not so much dance as it was a presentation on perspective and done to the music of Chopin. It was truly mesmerizing. Finally Act 3 had much more of what I would call true ballet, done to a violin concerto. Personally I found it to be the highlight of the evening and in my opinion the most challenging dance of the evening for this unique dance company.
If you were expecting the usual ballet fare maybe you would walk away scratching your head. But if you were open to some adventure in what ballet and dance could bring in a modern world of cell-phones and instant media, I think the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet hit close to the bulls-eye. Maybe not a home run, but at least a triple.
