About

ARLO GUTHRIE IN CONCERT:

Folk singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie always puts smiles on fansí faces with the stirring performances and friendly demeanor he brings to the stage. Crooning and strumming his signature ballads and protest tunes, this folk revival legend invites audiences to sing along to favorites like ìComing into Los Angelesî, ìThe Motorcycle Songî, and ìCity of New Orleansî. As Guthrie recaptures the enthusiastic energy and zest for social justice that made him a standout at the first Woodstock Festival, ticket buyers will find themselves swept up in the emotional pull of his touching songs. Guthrie is a captivating story teller, and audiences will be rolling in the aisles as he regales them with humorous anecdotes about the Summer of Love and his famous father Woody Guthrie. But even if fans are just there to hear one of the ë60s most famous folk troubadours perform his classic tunes, Arlo Guthrie is sure to delight.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The son of renowned folk singer Woody Guthrie, Arlo was raised to spread a message of social consciousness through his music. Growing up in Brooklyn, the younger Guthrie became deeply involved in Greenwich Villageís early ë60s folk scene, befriending luminaries such as Bob Dylan and Rambliní Jack Elliot. Just two years out of high school he released 1967's ìAliceís Restaurant Massacreî, a humorous talking blues track that satirized the Vietnam Draft. The songís popularity lead to an appearance during the first day of Woodstock í69, forever linking him to the countercultural movements that the festival espoused. Though heíll always be remembered for lending his voice to humanitarian causes, he also enjoyed a respectable comedic acting career well into the ë90s. These days, Arlo Guthrie still tours frequently so that friends far and wide can enjoy his riveting protest tunes and sidesplitting stories about the good old days.

    The gift of Arlo Guthrie

by Jackye on 3/17/20Birchmere - Alexandria

As a member of the hippie generation I just had to see and hear Arlo perform his Alice's Restaurant at least one more time. I was so at home in the Birchmere setting and audience. Arlo was a star for everyone there and he met the expectation. I left there feeling so happy and grateful for the experience. To remember the 60s thru that piece and all of the others he sang was to remember how much we cared about the country and its people, and that our purpose was and is to contribute. Thank you, Burchmere, for continuing this tradition.

Great performance; loved the warm-up act - they were very clever and amusing. Arlo was very personable speaking with the audience. His voice is still good, nice selection of songs. Can tell he really misses Pete Seeger. Also, food and service was very good.

    So good

by Gigi on 3/4/20Birchmere - Alexandria

Arlo Guthrie and Folk Uke were so good. It was obvious they wanted to spend time with the audience and play the songs we came to hear, but to have us laugh, sing along and leave us feeling good. They certainly did all that and more!

    Arlo was in great form!

    by C. on 3/3/20Birchmere - Alexandria

We have seen Arlo a number of times at The Birchmere and also at Payomet. He is always enjoyable, and was at his best this past weekend. Despite protesting about singing the same songs for over 50 years, he still puts energy and fun into them. Folk Uke with his daughter Cathy and Willie Nelson's daughter Amy were a great opener, really fun.

    Top notch ajow

by Pat on 3/3/20Birchmere - Alexandria

The opening by Folk Uke was great. They were funny and sweet and sang some interesting songs. Arlo never disappoints. He sang some a good mix of wonderful old favorites and some tunes I’d never heard before. Of course he had some stories. Who doesn’t love the stories? The trio of Arlo, Abe, and Terry has such great balance. I love their sound. This show was really fun to see and hear. I recommend it.

Great venue! Free Parking! Cheap good craft beer. Great view, good ticket prices. And of course Arlo (LOVE) I have been following his shows since 1980, haven't seen a bad one yet. And the opening act Folk Uke ( Arlo's daughter Katht and Willie's daughter) were awesome! Beautiful voices and funny quirky songs.
