    Anonymous 4 are mesmerizing

by Lollyjo on 5/20/15Virginia Arts Festival - Norfolk

This is my third time to hear this amazingly talented group of women and they never disappoint. They opened with a collection of motets which twist and turn in intricate harmony. Then they performed from their collection of shaped note, gospel and civil war era songs. These were my favorite. I love the resonant sound that Christ and St. Luke's offers, however be sure to arrive early enough to get a seat away from the columns. If you sit in the back section, it can be tricky getting situated in a seat that allows a clear view of the performers.

I loved this group-it was unlike any other I have ever heard. The evening was a delight. However-I think they'll not return to Bruton Parish for another concert. No one could see them unless they sat in a first row. A church is not the venue for a concert-especially when the performers were not on risers or on a stage.

    You made my soul smile

by AdonnaDunn on 3/7/11Bruton Parish Episcopal Church - Williamsburg

I have been a fan since the English Lady Mass and I have waited for over 20 years to hear this group live. My grateful thanks to Colonial Williamsburg for bringing them to me in one of the most wonderful venues possible - better than the violins on a Mozart stage in Vienna or the bearded monks in Khizhi.

    Superb performance - unfortunate venue.

by BillyandLyn on 3/7/11Bruton Parish Episcopal Church - Williamsburg

Artistically, this was one of the best concerts I've ever heard. Absolutely amazing vocalization! However, the venue was a disappointment - crowded (over sold), hot, and most of us had little or no view of the performers. Anonymous 4 deserves a better location!

I have been a fan since they first appeared on the scene. To find them appearing practically down the street from me was an opportunity not to be missed. It met every hope and expectation I had. I was fortunate to be among the later arrivals, and could only find a seat right up front, not more than 20 feet from them. From their first ethereal note, I was enthralled! I felt a physical response, total calm and peace. They sang without enhanced sound, merely their own perfectly blended vocal artistry. It is immediately obvious the amount of work that goes into their performance,; they communicate with their eyes and breath - hard to explain, but their starts and stops are perfectly synchronized. The first part of thr program was Early Music from the 13th and 14th centuries, from the Codex Las Huelgas,a Cistercian monestary/convent in Spain,. Following Church tradition of the time, it was in Latin. It was reminiscent of Gregorian chant, yet at the same time, different. After a short break, they returned with more modern Anglo-American Spiritual Songs, all in English.mostly from their CD Gloryland. Songs such as "Wayfaring Stranger", "Parting Friends" and other familiar folk hymns were included. The second part of the program was shorter, making the program only about 80 minutes long. The acoustics in Bruton Parish Church are prefect for such a performance, while the venue is not noted for it's comfortable seating! Anyone familiar with Early Music should not miss the opportunity to experience in person a performance by this wonderful group.

    ANONYMOUS 4 WAS ANGELIC

by A4groupie on 3/7/11Bruton Parish Episcopal Church - Williamsburg

These ladies have the voices of angels. To be sitting in a historic church lit by candlelight with acoustics that are so amazing, listening to these 4 voices singing everything accapella was to be transported to what I envision heaven to be like. A truly magicial evening.

The wonderful acoustics at this venue sublimely highlighted Anonymous 4's delicious vocal harmonies. This group only performs live at certain times, so if you have the chance to catch them, you will not regret it.
