About

Andrew Bird is an internationally acclaimed, Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, whistler, and songwriter who picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. Since beginning his recording career in 1997, Bird has released 17 albums and performed extensively across the globe. He has recorded with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, appeared as "Dr. Stringz" on Jack's Big Music Show, and headlined concerts at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and festivals worldwide.

Bird performed as the Whistling Caruso in Disney's The Muppets movie, scored the FX series Baskets, and collaborated with inventor Ian Schneller on Sonic Arboretum, an installation that exhibited at New York's Guggenheim Museum, Boston's ICA, and the MCA Chicago. Bird has been a featured TED Talks presenter, a New Yorker Festival guest, and an op-ed contributor for the New York Times.

More recently, Bird released a series of site-specific improvisational short films and recordings called Echolocations, recorded in remote and acoustically interesting spaces: a Utah canyon, an abandoned seaside bunker, the middle of the Los Angeles River, and a reverberant stone-covered aqueduct in Lisbon. Additionally, Bird hosts an ongoing series of live-streamed performances called Live from the Great Room, putting the creative process on display for fans as he collaborates and converses with friends in a candid, intimate setting.

Shortly after receiving his 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album, with My Finest Work Yet, Andrew Bird made his professional acting debut in the cast of Fargo's fourth installment, which concluded on FX in November 2020 and is currently streaming via Hulu. In March 2021, Bird released his latest project, These 13, an album entirely co-written and recorded with his longtime friend and former Squirrel Nut Zippers collaborator, Jimbo Mathus. Captured live to tape, just the two of them playing and singing from opposite sides of a microphone, These 13 marked the first set of new music that Bird and Mathus created together in more than 20 years.

    Delightful Show

    by woman4life on 8/5/23

If you've ever listened to Andrew Bird and weren't immediately wowed, that might all change when you hear him live. Andrew is more of a musician than showman (although when he spoke, he was quite engaging) but his show isn't dull in the least. His whistling just blows me away. At one point he did have to get a drink of water to be able to pull it off, but then he just nailed it. He often plays the violin like it's a guitar (more picking than strumming), his vocals are amazing, and the whistling is just stunning. He told the story of one of his new songs, and nearly everyone was laughing at least a little. I think he really feels what he's playing and singing. The set list was a pretty good mix of his tunes. Overall, it was a delightful eveningm and I'd definitely go again.

    Everything I hoped!

    by Jenzen8 on 8/5/23

The show was almost canceled due to a horrible storm. Cleared up right before it started. Beautiful night. Beautiful music. Been waiting a long time to see him. And I was better than what I expected. He is fabulous live and I wish it didn’t have to end.

    Great but too short!

    by EMcG on 8/5/23

I love Andrew Bird’s music. It was fantastic to see him perform. The lighting and other special effects were amazing. My one complaint is that I wish the concert would’ve gone longer. Beforehand I had read online that he performs about two hours for concerts and for this performance, he went for an hour and a half. I think it’s probably quite a strain on him to perform with all the whistling that he does, and singing and playing instruments, of course, but I was enjoying the concert soooo much and 1.5 hours in I thought there’d be another half hour, but no, …the end. If there’d been another just 15 to 20 minutes, that would’ve been great.

    A Beautiful Experience

    by Herms on 8/5/23

I really enjoyed this concert! My father always played his music during the summer time while my family and I swam. His music created a lot of core memories and being able to see Andrew live was amazing. His music is as lovely as it has always been. I highly suggest going to see him play live because it was amazing.

    Wonderful Show

Andrew Byrd and his fellow musicians are so precise musically and such fantastic live performers. The opener, Uwade, was very cool as well

    Excellent

    by Charly on 7/29/23

Definitely Andrew Bird is worth whatever favourable one wants to say about him. His mastery of the violin and the unique style to mix it with his voice, whistling and lyrics makes him one of the best. I’m so satisfied with his presentation.

Great people; venue could be improved

    by LizB on 7/25/23

Andrew Bird performed following opener Uwade. He was joined by Madison Cunningham who added a welcome dimension to an overall excellent performance. My chief criticism is of the looking glass lounge--I incorrectly assumed the stage would be visible from lounge seating. It does not bother me to stand but my companion wanted to sit and that would be a plus. The staff was unfailingly nice. there was a mixup (we entered the wrong door) but it was quickly resolved. Another plus was the convenient and inexpensive parking; we drove from the OC we had some concerns that it could be difficult. I definitely want to return to the Bellwether.

    Fantastic performance and set list

    by VA on 7/24/23

Vibrant and excellent performance by Andrew Bird with a fantastic band. The acoustic set was a great break in between with exceptional harmonies. The mix of current and past songs which are among my favorites was wonderful. So glad he played his hometown. His violin playing and whistling were flawless! For coming from very hot Pappy’s last night, he still had great energy. My friends and sister who joined me are now fans. Recommend the balcony at Bellwether.

    Exceeded my expectations

by Bobby on 4/16/23MGM Music Hall at Fenway - Boston

The concert was amazing! From the opening acts to the finale! I’ve listened and enjoyed Andrew Bird for years. During Covid, my wife surprised me with a live streaming performance of him at Christmas. This year, I received actual live concert tickets, for Christmas. It was so much more incredible than I anticipated. My wife has never been as big a fan as I of his music, but after attending his concert she now has a better appreciation of his style and music. Looking forward to seeing him again!
