    Watts a virtuoso

by JonathanBrewer on 3/23/16Schermerhorn Symphony Center - Nashville

We were entertained by the Nashville symphony for about two hours, and they were great, but the highlight of my night was undoubtedly the performance put on by Andre Watts. I have had (and have always enjoyed) his Gershwin album, but was amazed to see that he can pull off these piano riffs live for 40 minutes with amazing percision and no missed notes! The audience was so thrilled, Andre got a stanfing ovation that lasted for four trips back to the stage before they would quiet. To touch on the negatives, parking was $30 and that was an unexpected expense, the acoustics were not great i.e. the sounds blended too much together and often the instruments were indistinguishable when not playing solos, and the choice of music prior to intermission was not outstanding and for almost thirty minutes of music my dad and I commented that we could not hear a melody line. Positives outweighed the negatives, we will go again!

    Unbelievable!!!

by Anonymous on 3/1/16Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

I've seen this concerto performed multiple times and Andre' Watts pulled our every emotion from this brilliant work by Rachmaninoff. I look forward to Mr. Watts returning to Tucson someday.

His performance was nothing short of magnificent and the acoustics even in the nose bleed seats was wonderful.

We so enjoyed his inspired playing of a beautiful piece. Orchestra offerings were excellent also.

    Astonishingly good performance of Rachmaninoff

by Reeky on 3/1/16Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

André Watts, conductor Gerhardt Zimmermann, and the TSO combined for an amazing performance, one of the best symphonic concerts that I've ever attended. Watts' playing was flaming hot and emotional -- perfect for Rachmaninoff -- and Zimmermann collaborated closely to bring the same emotion and drama from the orchestra. An absolutely special night!

    100,000 Watts

by Pianoboy on 6/17/14Hamilton College - Clinton

One of the best recitals I have ever attended. The set of Chopin Etudes breathtaking--like no other. Exquisite Mozart a minor Rondo. Scarlatti set with all the power, daring, and color of Gilels, maybe more. Watts's Estampes were superb, entirely musicianly and and full of power--he should record these and the Images and the suites--commanding in this material. The Beethoven driving and fiery, the Liszt utterly right, of course, with the Sorpiro evoking heartbreaking beauty. A grand romantic nature commanding grand virtuosity.

    Very good but not memorable

by Emet on 3/29/11Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

Andre Watts playing Liszt is an event no music lover should miss. After all, Watts is one of the best classical pianists alive and his unanimously accepted genius has enriched our spiritual lives for close to a half of a century. Liszt is one of his favorite composers; he even adopted his theatrical playing style. And yet, some two thirds of the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts was empty at the last Saturday evening recital. This was rather unpleasant and embarrassing for such an educated and cosmopolitan community as our town is. I just hope that the culprit was the high cost of tickets and the recession rather than the competition of a certain college basketball game. Even the artist was somewhat influenced by this lack of interest; empty houses are not exactly stimulating. Accordingly, his performance, although brilliant was somewhat “matter of fact”. The technique of Watts is impeccable and the interpretation of the Sonata in B minor was exquisite: passion, fire, bravura, flawlessness; his part-Hungarian heritage showed up when interpreting the folklore inspired Rhapsody No. 13. Overall the repertoire was good (personally I would have preferred some other pieces such as Transcendental Etudes, e.g. No.10, Etudes after Paganini, Rhapsody No. 2) and the recital was very good but not memorable.

As the old adage goes; "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". Well, I have never held back ----so. The artist is very skillful, the music was cacophony.
