The show was pathetic. Uninspired. Really bad...in fact depressing. Please note: I'm not some kind of negative naysayer - with nothing better to do than to diss a show...but I had to comment on this one. 10 minutes into the set and no one was dancing - except one poor soul in the front row waving his arm around (probably on crank). Uber-minimal lighting and no displays. Be clear on this - if you think those great visuals will be behind Amon at his dj set - they wont. Nope! Just him standing there - barely moving - tucked under his baseball cap - on a blacked out stage. So it's no surprise that the audience was just standing there too (not in awe mind you) but waiting for something (anything) to happen. No shouts from the crowd, no whistles, just nothing. Far worse than a snooze-fest...it was downright sad. The music he was spinning was a forced pairing of trance and hip-hop - an audio nightmare that sounded like mud pouring out of the speakers. It was loud and garbled (not deep and crisp). We left before it ended...couldn't take more. For those of you who were there and liked the set - ya simply gotta get out more!
I've been around the world in pursuit of great music, electronica, dj's, etc. I met my wife in Ibiza (in 2000)...and I'm no rookie to the scene. Just this month I've seen Lee Foss, Porter Robinson, Calvin Harris, Freq Nasty and even Ellie Gouldiing to mix things up. Let me tell you - if you've got 25 bucks eating a hole in your pocket - skip the next Amon Tobin dj set and get yourself a nice meal - then go see a real show down the road...you'll be glad you did.
Don't believe me? I took a photo...notice the one hand in the air in the front. Sigh...
