About

John Newton (Tony Award® nominee Josh Young), a willful and musically talented young Englishman, faces a future as uncertain as the turning tide. Coming of age as Britain sits atop an international empire of slavery, he finds himself torn between following in the footsteps of his father – a slave trader – or embracing the more compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart (Erin Mackey). Accompanied by his slave, Thomas (Tony Award® winner Chuck Cooper), John embarks on a perilous voyage on the high seas. When that journey finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of self-reckoning inspires a blazing anthem of hope that will finally guide him home.

Brimming with emotion and adventure, AMAZING GRACE is an unforgettable musical saga that captures the spirit of history’s sweetest and most powerful sound: freedom.

    It was Amazing

by BobnDebT on 11/14/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

What a wonderful show, full of emotion, energy, power and meaning. I am so sad to see it finish on Broadway with such a short run. This is a story that has it all - an unexpected heroine, a hero who tried to run away form his pain, raw and unfiltered brutality of slavery without being gratuitous, people who crossed societal and class lines to help fellow human beings suffering from injustice. It is a story of bad decisions, betrayal, courage, second chances, forgiveness and amazing redemption and I wish I could see it again.

Breathtakingly beautiful production. The truthful moments of the actors were unbelievably powerful and the technical effects used to bring this show to life were astounding especially the sinking ship. I thoroughly wept during the last 20 minutes of the show, overcome by the beauty of the story: redemption, hope, and a changed life. Nothing is so inspiring as the audience coming to a standing ovation before the finale as the cast sings Amazing Grace.

    Amazing!

by BuenaVista on 10/28/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

While I had heard good things about Amazing Grace, the fact that it was leaving Broadway made me wonder it was up to its billing. It was and more. The story line was excellent and the songs well-versed and performed magnificently. The event moved very quickly and had a superb mix of drama, romance, humor, and morality.

    Why is this show closing??

by RJKu on 10/28/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Both my friend and I loved this show so much that we came back to see it a 2nd time and brought 2 other friends with us! It was one of the best shows I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot. The voices were incredible, holding notes longer than you would think possible. The costumes were beautiful and the story itself, along with the staging, were fabulous. I would have seen it a 3rd time if it didn't close.

    Unforgettable!!!!

by Birthdaygal49 on 10/27/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Amazing Grace was absolutely breath taking and fantabulous!! The cast was most excellent and characters display was well performed and I actually shed a few tears. Their demonstration of what "Grace" is was well received. The show caused a loving effect on the audience as I personally experienced with people I met at the theatre for the fist time in my life. Every cast member was viewed as perfection to me. I would come see this play again and again and again. I'm hoping it returns to the theatre at a much larger venue because there were people that came as far as Atlanta and St. Louis in the audience or I'm hoping Amazing Grace is traveling throughout the US. Excellent work guys!! I had a blast watching!
