The Alley Cats in Concert

Listening to The Alley Cats can be like time-traveling to a golden era for vocal groups, when ad hoc doo-wop quartets sang their hearts out on street corners. But an Alley Cats concert is more than a fond look into the musical rearview mirror. The group brings a vitality to the music, making it feel completely contemporary. So even when the Cats are delivering classics from the days of doo-wop like "Duke of Earl," "Earth Angel," or "Sixteen Candles," the energy in the room gives the whole experience an undeniable urgency. The Alley Cats aren't limited to doo-wop either. They also deliver a cappella versions of early rock 'n' roll tunes like "La Bamba" and "Runaround Sue," and they offer a holiday show filled with favorite seasonal tunes. With bass singer Royce Reynolds and second tenor Mando Fonseca leading the charge, The Alley Cats have been bringing their blend of a cappella, humor, and showmanship to the stage since 1987, and with infusions of new blood along the way to keep things fresh, they show no signs of slowing their roll.

The Alley Cats Background

Founded by bass singer Royce Reynolds and second tenor Mando Fonseca, The Alley Cats first came together in 1987 at Southern California's Fullerton College. Andre Peek and Todd Dixon completed that original lineup, and the group rode the rising tide of a cappella music with a big bag of doo-wop tunes and four sets of golden pipes. Over the years, The Alley Cats have been seen and heard far and wide. TV appearances include 'Good Morning America,' 'The Arsenio Hall Show,' 'Home & Family,' and 'Madman of the People.' They've performed a multitude of Disney events, from 'Blast to the Past' to the New York and Los Angeles premieres of 'Hercules,' and worked as an opening act for rock 'n' roll legends like The Coasters, Chubby Checker, and The Righteous Brothers' Bill Medley. And while many different members have passed through The Alley Cats' ranks through their long career, the group's commitment to bringing the sounds of the '50s forward is as strong as ever.

    Great but too short

by Butter on 3/26/19Scherr Forum-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza - Thousand Oaks

The Alley Cats were very good, it was an enjoyable performance all around. I do think that the show was way too short though. They only sang for an hour and 10 minutes, and that includes the encore. They also spent a great deal of time joking with the audience and telling corny jokes. Quite a few people sitting around me were complaining about the same thing as well, to short for the price of the tickets. Lower the price or lengthen the show!

    Left me wanting more…

by LARuby on 3/26/19Scherr Forum-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza - Thousand Oaks

The Alley Cats were terrific! Let me just say that straight out. They are a talented, funny bunch of guys who can really sing. The crowd was wildly enthusiastic and sang along to these great oldies. However, the show was waaaaay too short. It was only an hour, and frankly, for the $50 ticket cost, I felt a little cheated. Even 90 minutes would have been better. There were four Alley Cats and they took turns singing lead on the songs, so it's not as if one guy had to carry the whole show. When they left the stage after only 60 minutes (and truth be told, at least 15 minutes of that was banter), I was quite disappointed.

    Not enough music.

by RocknRobin on 3/26/19Scherr Forum-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza - Thousand Oaks

What a disappointment. The Alley Cats Talent is obvious, yet they kept it well hidden with their constant talking, joking and audience participation. Most of the jokes were funny. Our guess was 1/2 of the 1-hour "concert" they were doing everything but singing. $50 bucks each and we drove one hour drive each way for 1/2 hour of music? My request was also not sung, and it was on their song list as featured.

    Fantastic

by MaineJohn on 3/18/14Scherr Forum-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts - Thousand Oaks

The Alley Cats are absolutely fantastic. They interjected humor into the act and audience participation and boy could they ever sing. Their repertoire was unbelievable; their voices, superb. I was so sorry when the show ended. Love these guys and will definitely go to see them again.

What a great evening. The songs were ones we knew and remembered well and executed with great enthusiasm. And there was lots of fun to go along with it. We will go again.

    Excellent show

by CWCA on 4/29/13Scherr Forum-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts - Thousand Oaks

This was a very entertaining show and the music was awesome! They throw in some comedy in between their songs (and even in their songs) and that just makes it that much more enjoyable.
