    Remarkable concert with Gavrylyuk/Petrenko.

by Lacis on 8/7/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The orchestra showed an astounding ensemble quality in all three works on the programme, and the sound was as controlled in piano as in fortissimo. I came to think of how the Philadelphia orchestra sounded under the baton of Eugene Ormandy! Petrenko showed an excellent grasp of the music, and he cooperated convincingly with the soloist in the Tchaikovsky concerto. Gavrylyuk is a real virtuoso, but he uses his virtuosity to present all facets of the musical context. His tempi were also well chosen, and the cadenzas were musically very well built up.

    Awesome night at the Bowl!

by tomster on 7/29/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Tuesday's performance at the Hollywood Bowl was amazing in every way! The selections were crowd pleasers, the Conducter and Piano Soloist were outstanding, and the orchestra never sounded better (especially on the Sibelius). My only complaint was the interference in my enjoyment by the heliocopters that flew right through the restricted air space, and spoiled the mood and the sound for minutes at a time. This happened at four different inopertune times in the concert.. Aside from that, my wife and I had a magical experience.

Tchaikovsky a Classic but Fell Flat

by CatieE on 7/28/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The pieces were some of the most traditional ones played at the Bowl, I know, and I have heard them many times of course. The conductor did very well but I thought the pieces fell a little flat toward the end as compared to other times and recordings I have heard them.

    Excellent show

    by mgnm257 on 7/28/11Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The LA Phil is top notch, there is no better orchestra on the west coast, possibly the country. Gavrylyuk was on point and fabulous. The conductor isn't Dudamel, but still pretty good. I am proud as a Los Angeleno to have such great musicians as a part of my city and my summer.
