    Aladdin not so magical

by RHmom on 8/25/12Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester Hills

Unfortunately this play was not worth the money. The props never changed and we never understood why the Aladdin set had Detroit Tiger signs. The costumes were not worthy of the ticket price and Jasmine's costume was awful with jean shorts under sheer netting pants. The beginning of the play was confusing with the actors running out in the crowd with inappropriate attire. Beautiful venue, beautiful night, disappointing play.

    Aladdin

First, charging $10 to park on the grass is absurd!! It makes for a poor start to a family outing. Second, to have an intermission within 20 minutes of starting the play strictly to boost concession sales is robbery. Kids have a limited attention span to start with and then with all the parents coming back with snacks for the kiddies since there was nothing else to do for the 20 minute break added to the total overall time, the total bill and was a real waste in a play that didn't last much longer than an hour. Third, I can't fault the actors and I won't be critical of their performance. It was obvious that they were trying very hard to do a great job. I give them credit, but the scenery and the overall writing of the play was poor. The beginning of the play lost most people... adults and kids, in that they didn't know much what was happening. The play within a play was poorly developed and should have been eliminated with more emphasis on set and costumes so that kids would be better able to be entertained. It really missed the mark

I am 24 years old and took my girlfriend (same age) to see this since she is a big Disney fan. Both of us were very disappointed. We were excited to see this after seeing the Beauty and the Beast Broadway show. The Aladdin show doesn't even begin to compare. The show lasted about an hour and a half, including about a 15-20 minute intermission. The play seemed extremely low budget. The set didn't change at all throughout the entire thing, unless you count a small cardboard prop that was wheeled to the center of a stage with a little bit of dungeon scenery on one side (gray wall) and cave scene on the other (brown wall). A little bit of scaffolding was on the stage and remained there the entire time (this was used to illustrate every other scene and even remained in the background during the dungeon and cave scenes). The costumes were below average and there were 6 or 7 actors playing every character (15 or so). There was no Abu (Aladdin's monkey) or Rajah (Jasmin's tiger) or Lago (Jafar's parrot) or even any attempt at a magic carpet. The end was very dull. There was no fight scene and it was effortless to defeat the bad guy. The genie didn't even show up until the last 20 minutes or so of the show. He was the best character and actually had a couple funny lines. There was a chase scene at the beginning (in which the characters ran through the audience) that was amusing for a short while. All of the young children in the audience were bored out of their minds. After the show, one young child said something to the effect of, "This is like a movie with real people except movies are actually good." Most parents played on their phones or kept entertaining their children to stop them from being too terribly bored. There was no music at all. None of the actors sang and they didn't play any prerecorded music either. My girlfriend did the lights and sound for plays in high school and said that they were much better quality there than this show. I'm disappointed that Meadow Brook would host something like this. Not only did tickets cost a bit over $20 each, but then we had to pay $10 to park and $5 each for something to drink. I would not recommend this for any age group.
