Bluesy British pop singer-songwriter Adele Adkins, who performs as Adele, had a remarkable rise after she exploded onto the scene with her 2008 debut album, 19, and followed it up with her even more successful sophomore release, 21, in 2011. Those albums sold more than 12 million albums in the United States alone, and spawned the No. 1 singles "Rolling in the Deep," "Someone Like You," and "Set Fire to the Rain." By the end of 2011, Adele -- who counts Etta James and Beyonce among her influences -- was selling enough tickets to fill large venues and garnering positive reviews in the US and the UK. She's since pumped the brakes on her career, first to undergo successful throat surgery and then to give birth to and raise her first son, born in late 2012. She did find time, however, to record the song "Skyfall" for the James Bond film of the same name, which earned her an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2013. Though rumor has it that Adele began working on a new album in 2013, no release date or impending tour plans had emerged.
