About

In 1999, ego trip named A Tribe Called Quest No. 9 on their Hip Hop’s 25 Greatest Albums by Year 1980-1998 list. When A Tribe Called Quest first exploded onto the hip hop music scene, they were the refreshing alternative to what was on offer. The year was 1989, and the hip hop world truly had not heard anything quite like ATCQ. On tour, this dynamic trio (sometimes a quartet) is as unique as they are within their studio recordings, allowing for the beats dropped and lyrics spat to engulf their audience. Ticket holders know that their stage shows are never about the sights to be seen but the quality of music to be heard. The Love Moment, their most recent album release, peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.

The band comprises of Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and sometimes Jarobi White on the mic and DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad on the turntables.  Q-Tip and Phife grew up together in Queens and later later met up with Shaheed in high school. ATCQ’s first album was released in 1989 and it spawned great classics like "Can I Kick It?" However, the success of their second album The Low End Theory completely eclipsed the success of the first. ATCQ continued to release great studio albums and singles throughout the 1990s until they announced they were disbanding in 1998. Having been nominated for a Grammy award twice for Best Rap Group, ATCQ was formally honored in 2005. At that time, they also received a special achievement award from Billboard and were later awarded at the Fourth VH1 Hip Hop Honours. Even without a row of accolades on their mantel piece, ATCQ has achieved the kind of success through their music that others can only dream about.
