About

With quick-witted dialogue and a playful score, 1776 dramatizes the impassioned debates of Philadelphia's Second Continental Congress. As George Washington sends updates from the military front, patriots John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson attempt to persuade the 13 colonies to separate from British rule. Based on the letters and memoirs of America's founding fathers, this classic, Tony Award-winning musical showcases the principles, pride and determination that influenced the birth of our nation.

    Theater and Musical Excellent

by Anonymous on 6/12/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

Third musical we have watched at the Ford Theater. Each musical was well cast and a delight to see and hear. The new seats are comfortable, and combining this with the historical significance of the theater and the sad reminders of the assassination of a great American president, makes this an emotional and entertaining experience. The complex, which includes the museum, the house where Lincoln died, and the educational center, makes this a must visit location for the whole family. Our thanks to all involved who have preserved this important history for all americans to experience.

    1776 was totally delightful!

    by Petra609 on 6/12/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

The show is a great show with fun music and wonderful characters; our founding fathers. The story of the birth of our nation is compelling and enlightening, at the same time. The performers chosen for this production were outstanding. All of them played their parts expertly. The singing was glorious; the acting superb. If I had one minor complaint it would be the costumes. They seemed a bit shoddy. However, the set design was first rate, as was the lighting. Great job by the director and the performers.

Really enjoyed this again. Timeless musical about an interesting time in American History that we were sharing with an 8-year old girl who enjoyed the jokes.

1776 was all I hoped for

by JHThree on 6/12/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

Having grown up with Bicentennial mania in Philadelphia in the '70s and having seen the movie version of 1776 many times, I really wanted to see the stage version. I was not disappointed. It entertained as always, while being though-provoking. The performances were excellent and the singing uniformly strong.

    "1776" was a TERRIFIC production !

by twoontheaisle on 6/12/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

"1776" is a wonderful show, and Ford's really did an first rate job with it. Excellent cast in both acting and singing, fine direction, very effective sets, costumes, and lighting - how can you miss? I have never seen a show at Ford's that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. Their work is of the highest quality, and since the renovation, the seats are more comfortable and the theatre looks beautiful.

1776 was incredible at Ford's Theater. I saw it twice, it was so good. The entire cast was outstanding, and to watch a show about our nation's history in a venue filled with so much history itself was a very exciting experience.
